Why do elders thump the table?

mrs ozzie and i had a very pleasant visit yesterday to a lady who has plenty of questions as she seeks the truth about 'the troof'.. she told us that as a young 18 year old she commenced regular pioneering and has many memories of her time in the borg.

now in her early 60s she has many questions.

her well-marked and well-used nwt bears testimony to her earnestly seeking of the truth.. she told us that not too long ago she invited the presiding overseer and the visiting c.o.

There are a great many elders that are strictly top water stuff. They have learned how to use the index and that’s about it. If you ask something that is not easily referenced with a bout a hundred Watchtower articles, then they get very nervous. (They have just peered into the depths below and they have seen great big monsters lurking down there!) These guys instinctively know that they are shallow but resent it terribly when forced to confront their inadequacies.

Then there are the deep water swimmers that have seen (and skirted) those great big denizens of the deep (Why does God permit evil…really; Why has the Society made so many mistakes if it is led my the holy spirit?; Why are there so many stupid elders if they are all appointed by the holy spirit?;Why is the Bible so cryptic?; etc.) These guys know about these monsters of the deep but they do not want to confront them. They are looking for the answers themselves and when they are confronted with these questions by others it just reminds them of their own doubts. When they can’t convince others by the publications, it makes them angry because they realize down deep inside that the answers they are giving are wrong. Instead of being angry at the source of the problem they strike out at the much more vulnerable publisher in front of them.

The Society does not comment directly on this passage very much. When it does it pretty much relegates this particular ‘component’ of the ‘composite sign’ to the first century and the destruction of the temple. Please note the following quote:

“Those misleading men would not come saying, ‘I am Jesus,’ but would come using the title Messiah and would come saying: “I am the Christ.” For Jews, those professed Messiahs would have to be Jews, not Gentiles. In view of the threatening destruction of Jerusalem, they would come as Liberators, Preservers, of the Holy City, for which reason they would have much appeal to the Jews and would mislead many.” -- W70 1/15 p.43; w57 10/15 p. 614; God’s Kingdom Has Approached - p. 296)

It’s also used as a general warning to the flock that there would be ‘false prohets’ to watch for. (w64 11/1 p. 645; w57 10/15 p. 614)

It’s was also used to warn the ‘shepherds’ not to go ahead of the FDS (w54 6/15 p. 378)

pastor sentenced

vancouver/ cknw (am980) -- a former evangelical pastor who worked in a number of b.c.

communities, has been been handed jail time for sex crimes dating back more than four decades.

70-year-old rollin walton has been sentenced to five months behind bars and 18 months probation, after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault involving female victims.. the offences took place between 1958 and 1976.. at the time, walton was a practicing pastor who lived in a number of b.c.

Walton is has been ordered to have no contact with females under the age of 25, or women who suffer from a mental disability, unless he's in the company of another adult.

Good advice for ALL 70 year old men!

Is Death the End?

for once i will try to post a serious topic so here goes.... most of us here have rejected most if not all of the jw teachings.

i (as well as most of you) certainly do not believe that armaggedon will arrive someday in the future and everybody who is not a jw will die and the witnesses that are left will rebuild the earth.. so, the question i have is this: what do you think happens when you die?.

do you go to heaven or hell?

The only honest answer to this is: I don't know. But then everyone knows that! Pretty much all creatures will try very hard to sustain their lives. We chalk this up as instinct and I have no problem with that. I think that as humans we have this instinct as well. But...we are also able to contemplate our end. I find that significant. It's such a terrible waste when a human dies. It's like taking the time to write a very complex and innovative program and not saving it to a disk. After you're just about finished working out the bugs and have it going your way, you shut off the computer. You may be able to write ANOTHER program but THAT one is gone forever.

I’m truly sorry to hear of your loss. My father committed suicide when I was fifteen but not before telling me that he was going to do it. I pleaded with him that Saturday morning but what can a fifteen year old kid do? He did it the next weekend.

Many years later my younger brother did the same thing…after telling me that he was thinking about it. I failed both times to keep it from happening. At times I have these feelings myself and I struggle with them.

There comes a time when the pain in a person’s life is so great that it becomes unbearable to contemplate going through one day. Perhaps in some strange way it’s a way of letting those of us who must bear the pain of their passing know just how much they were hurting.

if the wall cannot be penetrated, how do you reach the mind of the witness?.

What would you tell this person if he were to ask you why it is that your publications said that this preaching work that you are doing was going to end in the twentieth century and yet here you are, in the twenty first century, doing what you said you would not be doing?

What you say here is true but I doubt seriously that it's enough for a 'worldly' person to effectively get inside that witness' 'wall'. It is easy for one who has been a witness to understand and follow your reasoning but I do not believe that a non-witness would fare well in their attempt to shake the witness.

I think perhaps you may have overlooked the primary objective of the JW's preaching...it's to 'bring people into the truth'. He is trained and conditioned to pursue that goal while he continually assures his target that: "I'm not here to change your religion."

Some of us may have forgotten those terribly boring demonstrations at the service meeting showing us 'how easy it is to start a study after you leave the publication and make a return visit'. We may have forgotten how many times we were told to tell our study: "If you don't come to the meetings, I may not be able to continue our visits." (Be sure to smile as you say this.) This as well as other ways and means to let us know that we should drop unfruitful studies.

JW's as a rule do not make regular visits to worldly persons' homes unless they are studying with them. Your reader would have to agree to a study in order for him to chip away at that wall. Your reader would have to juggle feigning interest in the material, promising to go to the hall, enduring the ocassional visit with an elder and perhaps even the C.O.

To say that most people are not prepared (or even interested in doing so) to do so is an understatement. Those who are prepared to do so need more detailed information.

My girlfr and I went to the Assembly Hall today

5 years removed from being inside the indianapolis assembly hall of jehovah's witnesses, 4 years from attending a meeting at the kingdom hall, this morning my girlfriend and i walked into the assembly hall.

we were taking an early morning walk in our jogging clothes in downtown indy.

she asked if there was anywhere i'd like to go.

I go to the hall quite frequently. I'm still technically 'in' (just inactive) and I have life-long acquaintances there that I enjoy seeing and talking to. I also visit them at their homes. It's been close to two years (I think!) since I stepped down and stopped going door to door.

In my opinion they have a lot of things right and they have a lot of things wrong. Their unwillingness to acknowledge their fallacies (more important, their refusal to admit that they CAN be fallible) is perhaps their greatest organizational sin...in my opinion.

Hi, I am new to this board

my name is jessi, i am 24 and new to this site.

i spent the last hour or so reading some of the posts and wow!

i think i am in the right place.. a brief bio, i was raised as a "full" second generation witness (my grandmother converted) but always knew that i didn't want to be a witness.

Oh, and just a little independent note about 1975 - the elders in my mother's congregation preached that it was the end of the world.

It was more than a local phenomena. The problem is that somehow they have forgotten that they were doing that and have been convinced in some way that this teaching was never pushed by the Society.
