Not sure how good these new songs are. Mrs Eyeslice hasn't come home singing her little heart out.

Wife off to singing practice tonight will the new songbook be any better?
by eyeslice ineven as a loyal jw i though thought our singing was pretty crap.
now, i sometimes catch a religious service on the radio and cannot help thinking how much better 'worldly' churches are in their approach to the use of music in their worship.
personally, if i were going to choose a religion based on music, i'd have to join a church with a gospel choir; i just love the warmth and enthusiasm of gospel music.. .

10 Failed Doomsday Predictions - Witnesses Did Not Make Top 10 Unless you Count the Millerites
by zarco inwith the upcoming disaster film "2012" and the current hype about mayan calendars and doomsday predictions, it seems like a good time to put such notions in context.
most prophets of doom come from a religious perspective, though the secular crowd has caused its share of scares as well.
one thing the doomsday scenarios tend to share in common: they don't come to pass.. .

It is interesting though how the JWs are/are not backing off any specifics regarding the time of the end. 1914 is still a core doctrine yet at the same time things like the 'generation' doctrine has changed beyond recognition. As an outsider now, I think that they are confused and non-commital about the end times.

How Many Elders Are Here?
by tjlibre inhow many elders are here?.
i dont know if this topic has been posted before.
but after realizing that i sort of resurrected an old post from outofthebox, i thought of starting a new one with the topic above.

I think that there are many like myself - former elders. What is also surprising is just how many years some us of served in the organization as 'appointed men' before we left. Personally, I served in various positions for just short of 30 years.

With the new songbook coming into use soon, the local congregation has organized a practice evening tonight. I don't much about the new songs but what are the chances that it will turn the congregations into songbirds?
PS My wife looks like an angel but sings like a frog! Harsh but true.

If The Society Could....What Else Would Be Considered "Improper" To Do?
by minimus inrecently there was a thread about the evils of "social networking" for witnesses.
facebook, my space and other similar sites are "worldly" and to be avoided.. before you know, nearly everything will be considered unacceptable for a christian witness of jehovah.
let's have fun and go to extremes...what else will be a no-no?.

Surf the internet. It is the single most dangerous activity for practicing JWs and the greatest threat to the control of the Society.

Not sure whether banning would be in order. People have the right to eat what they like but they also need to be aware of the consequences. Diseases such as cancer, diabetese and cancer continue to be the scurge of the wealthy developed nations.
I have just finished reading a book called 'The China Study'. It might seem to be a little extreme to many but there seems little doubt that a vegetarian, almost vegan, diet is the best for all round health and avoiding cancer. Personally, I am vegetarian for a number of reasons and try to eat as little processed foods as possible.

Ex-Elders Outnumber Elders In My KH; what does that suggest to you?
by Room 215 inright now, the number of ex- elders (either resigned, pushed out or df'd) outnumber the present elders; what does this suggest to you?

I think that Zarco has just about summed it for me.
Only rarely as an elder did I feel that being an elder was truely Christ like. Perhaps I would still be there if elders really did tend to the sick and those in need but the sad reality is that the whole set up lends itself to politics, back-biting and back-stabbing. After a life time in, I was glad to get out.

i don't eat...
by highdose inas i tuck into some very nice birthday cake today i'm reminded at my many attempts at entertaining jw's over the years.
eventualy i stopped because whenever i invited someone i got told " i don't eat..." wheat, dairy, sugar, etc.
it made catering almost impossible and that was the rare poliet ones.

I used to eat everything and anything that was put before me! I
I stopped eating meating and fish a few years back, however, because no one else in my family was eating meat. I don't ever make a fuss about it though, if I go out to diner at friends and they are having a roast, I simply just eat the veggies, I never expect them to cook anything different for me.

What's with all the 'Imminent' nonsense?
by AK - Jeff incould it be that the proximity of 2014 is at the heart of it?.
i have no contact with jw's - except on this board - but my wife does at times with her family.
imminent is the cry of the sky for the jw's it seems.. i recall the years leading up to 1975 with a lot of that sort of thing.

It has been 'imminent' all my life. I was never going to leave school. I wasn't to go to university because there wasn't time to spend 6 years studying a profession that would become obsolete in the new system when God would take care of all our illnesses. I wasn't ever going to need a pension.
I might just got it all wrong somewhere along the way!

Simple Living and Lifestyle Choices
by daniel-p ini think a lot about how i spend my life and what i might be able to do to get more out of it.
the problem, however, is that change is hard.. i'm not content with how society wants us to spend our time and money: getting iphones, going out to eat constantly, going on weekend vacations, buying things on the internet, watching tv, etc.. i try to analyze what i do... but like i said, it's hard to change it.. my life consists of the following:.
waking up: i get up in the morning, my wife has already left for work/school, i get my morning cup of tea and eat a bowl of cereal.

I too have yearned for the simple life. I guess part of it is the former Witness background where we told that the big A would be here any minute and material possessions would could for nothing.
I would like to run a guest house on a tropical beach somewhere. Wouldn't have to make much of a profit but it would mean meeting passing people and sharing a few days of their lives with them. We can all dream can't we??
