  First "Big Meeting" for our hall was tonight

  so we hadour first big meeting tonigh ( bookstudy, ministry school and service meeting ) here are my observations:.

  1) even though it is the same amount of time, it seemed verrrrry long.

  2) it seemed like a circus.....too many parts that did not relate to the others....seemed like a crossword puzzel with 6 different languages.

  Yes, it seems that the society has no time for little ones and children.

  I must admit that I haven't been to church much since I left the witnesses but like passwordprotected's church the one I did go to made quality time for the kids. They were involved in the proceedings and later left the main congregation to have their own 'Sunday School', whilst the adult congregation continued in more formal worship.

  I often think the whole Bethel service, district overseer, circuit overseer arrangement, where these are in the main lead by childless couples, have made the society totally child unfriendly.

  Spiritual junk food!

  I think a lot of us one time die-hards were the sort that really tried to bring the meetings to life and tried to be innovative and creative. But eventually you have to give up on the change from within approach - this organisation is doomed.

  Guess what? New meeting sucks just as much as the old one did.

  one lady even made the comment: "the person who studied with me said my little boy would never go to school.

  now i've got grand kids!

  " this got a big laugh.

  2009 - Something to look forward to or something to dread?

  I must admit that I am really an optimist by nature too, and the title of the thread is something to look forward to or dread! It is just that I started with the negatives.

  I agree that our wants, new autos, bigger and better computers, holidays and travel, etc. The desire for these things won't go away. Therefore things will pick up sooner rather than later.

  I do have a feeling that are going to be a little hard next year. And, I totally agree that no matter what happens, we probably won't starve and even things are difficult then we will still have a lot to be thankful for and to be happy about.

  one local jw heard that i was speaking about leaving the wts in church and quickly labelled it, in ignorance, as 'witness bashing'.. .

  Nice one PP.

  I thought you handled the subject sensitively and in a non-confrontational manner. The Society likes to depict all those who have left as being raging, aggressive and irrational apostates. Like you, even when on this board I try to be respectful of those who are still Jehovah's Witnesses; I don't personally go along with the name calling and belittling of those who remain Jehovah's Witnesses. Perhaps, as you say, we need to remember these in our prayers.

  The strange absence of meeting

  does anyone else feel a large gaping void in their life tonight now that the book study has been abandoned?

  i mean i hardly ever go to the meetings these days but i still like the feeling that they are there even if i am not physically present.

  tuesday without a meeting is just weird.. .

  Sounds like a euphemism for eliminate
  
  On a serious note though what we tend to ignore that is the fact that elders will be still be responsible looking after 'groups' of people. But I cannot see that this is going to be very successful, without the actual group study on a weekly basis the R&F will quickly lose that sense of belonging. It will be like trying to herd cats.

  • Ongoing destruction of the environment
  • Food shortages due to disproportionate distribution of wealth

  • The Middle East a mess
  • Terrorism an increasing threat

  But on the upside the big A must be even closer!

  As witness, I found it really hard to convince most other JWs that there are always two sides to every argument. Elders in particularly have been conditioned to find this hard to understand.
  
  I am sure Freddie Franz and the other GB members would tell a different story to Ray. What we, as reasonable people, have to do is to be able to, in an unbiased manner, is listen to both sides and draw our own conclusions.
  
  I think we all know the Society's stand on Malawi, the 1914 generation, etc, etc. Then, we have read Ray Franz's side. We then draw our own conclusions.
  
  The trouble with Society is that they refuse to defend or reason on their position on serious doctrinal matters and hide behind branding all questioning voices as apostate.

  If she was born in 1910 then she does not really count. She was 4 when the first war began an still only 8 when it ended.
  
  If you take the Society's revised definition (though still not the rather confusing current definition) that the generation is those alive contemporary with events taking place in the world, we have had at least 4 or 5 generations since she was born. For example you could say:

  • Those world leaders of WWI - people who would have been at the time in the 40 years plus age braken
  • The between the wars generation
  • Those world leaders of WWII
  • The baby boomer generation post WWII
  • The modern generation born since the start of the computer age (I know computers were around before then but weren't pervasive as they are now)

  I haven't been to a group study for the last 5 years but my wife is a regular attender. It was strange to have her in all evening last night.
  
  What is interesting is that her 'personal' study time consisted of preparing for the new book study, the school and service meeting - all things she would have done anyway!
