There is one female friend I have known since 1968. She has always kept up with me. In my opinion she is no longer a witness but she seems to believe she is so I guess she is.
She used to call me occasionally to catch up. Several months ago I started telling her some of the things I had learned here on JWD. She has not called me since. I did follow up with a few emails directing her to specific threads here and she didn't respond.
About a week ago I sent her the link to the news article about the 16 settlements on the court cases. She responded with a "Thanks, that was interesting." She still forwards me lots of silly emails but no more phone calls.

My daughter had the Intralasik procedure done about 2 years ago and she loves it. There are very few doctors that do the procedure - only one or two in Georgia. Her vision went from 20/800 to 20/12 the morning following the surgery & it gets even better as you heal.
I went back to her doctor to have it done 1 month ago. My vision was not that bad but I was beginning to have problems reading street signs from a distance. I went from 20/50 to 20/16 the morning following surgery. I do still need reading glasses but my far and mid vision is fixed. I don't have to get the expensive prescription ones anymore - they told me I could just get the cheap ones from the Dollar Store.
They said I would be sensitive to light but I did not expect it to be this much. I am using dark tinted reading glasses here sitting at the computer. I did not remember my daughter having this problem but she says she was very light sensitive for several months. So don't be surprised if you need to wear sunglasses a lot. I even wear them watching TV sometimes.
She paid almost $5,000 but the price had come down some by the time I had it and also I got a "family discount" so I paid less than $4000.
Good luck & enjoy your new vision. -

Did You Personally Know of Sex Offenders In The Congregation?
by minimus ini knew of 1 person that should've been reported to the authorities for fooling around with his sisters when he was an older teen and they were much younger.
it was hushed up by the elders, as this was considered a very prominent family.
the allegations were made probably 20 years ago, well before i was ever in that hall.

About three weeks ago I made a remark to my mother about the over 27,000 child molesting cases at WTS headquarters. She told me that my father knew a "pioneer brother" many decades ago that molested two boys. My father did nothing and did not report it. The "pioneer brother" ended up going to Bethel.
She also said that it is just a test on JWs that know about it to see if they stand by the organization!! I pretty much lost it and screamed at her saying, you mean it's okay to molest children because it is a test from Jehovah ??!!?? I was so mad I just left her house.
At the time I hadn't heard about the 16 settled cases. I did print out the news paper article later and left it on her dining room table along with copies of 2 articles about selling off property in NYC. She hasn't mentioned finding them. -

My son recently told me about a guy he worked with that was having a problem with the JWs bothering him all the time. He solved the problem by answering the door completely naked. They quit coming to his house.
I don't think that would work for everyone though and there might could be some possible legal issues (???) -

Just wanted to say I'm glad your kids are safe but you are correct in thinking about the grandkids and future wife (& any daughters she may have).
Have you discussed this with the police yet? When you go, ask to speak with the person that works with this problem most often. Let them read your letter and give you feedback. -

I had not read the Bible for many years until I found JWD. After I started reading JWD I dug out my old copy of the NWT (Revised 1970) and also the NKJV my daughter gave me on my birthday in 1992 (no, not a good memory - she filled in the gift page).
If it weren't for you guys I would never have known about the brackets[ ] indicating the words the WTS added. I was raised a JW and just never paid attention. I was just riding the wave and never questioned their interpretations until my daughter started researching many years after we faded.
I've started with Gen 1:1 dozens of times during my JW days but never got far. Maybe one day I'll start to read it again. -

Definitely contact the local police and furnish all details along with a copy of the letter to his parents.
He has your kids??? Do you have any reason to believe he may also be molesting them?
Sounds like a conversation with the police is long overdue. Many departments have trained specialists to handle these crimes. -

convention etiquette
by karvel infirst post, not sure if this is in the right section....anyway, last night's service meeting included a part about the upcoming district convention.
the usual take notes, make sure your teenagers sit with you, blah, blah, blah, was there but then they mentioned something new.
apparently now you have to wear your suit and lapel all weekend if you stay at a hotel.

I sure hope my mother reads that KM and makes it to the meeting where they discuss it. She just told me a week ago that the WTS does NOT tell you what to wear to meetings!

Strangers at your KH...
by lavendar ini was wondering this........at your (former or present) kingdom halls, do you ever have people (from off the street) attend a meeting?
i mean, do people (that nobody knows at the hall) just show up to see what a meeting is all about?
if so, how is that person(s) received?

Many years ago I showed up at a Sunday meeting in a Houston suburb and was totally ignored. I even got up the nerve to answer a WT question. After the meeting I took my time getting my things together to leave. One brother smiled at me. No one spoke. I left and never went back.

Are people REALLY leaving???
by lavendar inwingcommander said in a previous post:.
the bad news is this: the older generation of jw's is dying off, while the younger generation thanks to the internet and research, is able to see through the history of false prophecy and absolute control, and is now leaving in droves!
(he meant "bad news" for the wts).

I can only hope what others here on JWD report is true in most areas. My mother says their KH is growing rapidly and nearly 200 attend and they will need to split into another congregation. I said to her there must be a lot of JWs moving into the area. She didn't contradict that. It is a fast growing rural county not far from Atlanta and I suspect a lot are moving in from other areas.
She doesn't attend regularly and does not go in field service so I take what she says with a large grain of salt because she always talks about how wonderful the JWs are and would never admit anything bad about them.
