I guess it depends on how good a friend he is. If he is a very good friend, I think it would be a kindness to point out the issue, in as tackful a way as possible. Yes, he might be hurt or mad, but hopefully get over it and be a little cleaner. If he is more of an so-so friends, I would just decline any invitations to eat at his house. Either way, I don't think friendship requires you to accept food poisoning.

Ted Haggard Defends Bishop Eddie Long. OH THE IRONY!!!!
by whereami inreligion...the biggest hypocrisy mankind has ever practiced.. .

I am not surprised a bit. I once heard preacher ted give a memorial service. He was a great speaker, but something about him just struck me as phony. This was not long before the scandal. The whole big box church thing was pretty off putting as well, the auditorium could hold about 1000 people, they had giant screens everywhere, ugh. Now he has a church again, and people are flocking to this hypocrite and phony, I don't get it. Doesn't surprise me that he would defend Eddie Long. Come on Ted, just be what you are (a gay man) and stop pretending.

no guilt after celebrating a friends birthday
by dawntodaylight inso last nite i went out with a few friends to celebrate a bday.. and i had a great time!!
i did not feel like i was sinning, or turning my back on jehovah.
i sang happy birthday really loud!!!

I always felt that the reasons for not celebrating birthdays was pretty weak, but just went along to get along. What could possibly be wrong in wishing someone well for living another year, taking them out to lunch, baking a cake or giving a gift. Nothing, there is nothing wrong with that and never was.
Leprechan, I love your "cream of wheat" comparison. I can see it now: While the bible doesn't specifically mention "cream of wheat", consideration of the principles of the bible could lead some Christians to conclude that mixing "cream of wheat" with "cinnamon" might be too worldy and different for some, and could distract them from the ministry and putting God's Kingdom first. Also, those who don't like cinnamon at all might be stumbled and fall out of The Truth.

Reverse Shunning
by gutted ini have a confession.
i am using reverse shunning.. i have ignored the elders calls.
i do not want to hang out with witnesses anymore (besides my family and one friend).
-
LisaRose
This isn't really shunning per se, it just you choosing who you spend time with, nothing wrong with that. I have choosen to limit contact with my sister. After decades away, she went back to the org in order to have contact with her grandchildren. I had no problem with that, what are you going to do, but she started drinking the kool-aid and now it's hard to be around. She hasn't shunned me (yet), but the last time I saw her she drank to much and tried to convert my never-a-jw husband. She has also tried to talk me into going back, when I've made it clear to her that I would never, ever. It was scary to see, her turning into this brain washed robot. At times, she seems to ignore reality, to fit everything into the JW script. So I don't think of it as shunning, if she showed up at my door, she would be welcome. But I've limited the oppurtunites for interaction, just for my own sanity.

I didn't even know i WAS an apostate!
by GrandmaJones ini am currently just sick with grief.
i can't believe this is happening to me.
all the jokes i've made about me never "falling out of the truth" and self confidence about my spirituality.
-
LisaRose
Grandma Jones you are an inspiration! Keep on doing your own thing. I'm sure most here were at one time afraid of the "apostate" label, or even to afraid to talk to an "apostate", for fear of contamination. The word apostate isn't even in the bible, it's just a bogeyman for the society to keep people in line. Once you realize this, you are free to think for your self. It's scary at first, but then it's liberating, no longer do you have to do things that don't feel right, say things that you don't belive in your heart. It will be a wonderful journey, the path to true spirituality.

by highdose inapart from a member of the gb of course.... i've personly seen a brother gesturing so much he sent the mic stand flying!.
another who opened his mouth to speak and burped loudly into the mic instead!.
any others?.
-
LisaRose
Well this wasn't from the platform, but I was at a meeting once and two sister started going at it in the bathroom during a meeting. Apparently one had an interest in the other one's husband, and they were screaming so loudly you could hear it throughout the hall. I think slapping was involved as well. Most interesting meeting, ever.

Wow, thank you all for your positive comments. I did write this. I was on a long drive this summer, got it in my head and couldn't stop until I finished it. While it's no great work, it did express my feelings and I'm kind of proud of it - I've never written poetry before of any kind. I hope people do like it and forward it on. I posted this on another site and an ex-mormon liked it and did his own mormon version, very funny.

A is for Armageddon
In which we though we’d die
If we didn’t believe in
The Jehovah’s Witness lie
B is for the Boasting
On every convention stage,
By people who in preaching work
Did constantly engage
C is for Christianity
Of which we did profess
But thought all the other churches
Were filled with evilness
D is for Disfellowship
A price you soon would pay
If you were not perfect in
The Jehovah’s Witness way
E is for the Elders
Men you must respect
Even if they didn’t possess
A normal intellect
F is for the Friendship
At the Kingdom Hall
Until you made a small mistake
And by gossip you did fall.
G is for the Guilt
That was heaped upon your head
For “can’t you do a little more?”
- At least until you’re dead.
H is for the History
Of never which was said
Of “miracle wheat” and houses built
For people that were dead
I is for the Internet
Where never you must go
For then you’ll learn about the things
You weren’t supposed to know
J is for Jerusalem
And the date they lied to say
Would mean the end times and the generation
That would never pass away
K is for the Kingdom Hall
In which hours you did spend
Although is was very boring
From beginning to the end
L is for Loving fellowship
With which they sucked you in
Until the day you were baptized
And then it all did end
M is for the Ministry
Of which you did partake,
Even though you hated it
Until the donut break
N is for the Neighbors
To whom you seemed quite strange,
For even little Christmas cards
You never did exchange.
O is for the Overseer who
Came from time to time
To tell you how bad you were
And beg you for a dime
P is for the Prayer
Which you though would fix all ill
Until it really didn’t
Then you had to pray more still
Q is for the Questions
Of which you could not say
For then you’d be “apostate”
And made to go away
R is for the Relatives
Who you never more do see,
For it wouldn’t do at all
To know you went happily
S is for the Slave
So faithful and discrete
Who gave you the spiritual food
That changed with every week
T is for the Tribulation
For which we lived in fear,
For it’s so close we really knew
It had to be next year.
U is for the underline
We did in every ‘tower,
To make sure we never said
A thought that might be ours
V is for the victims
Of pedophiles and snakes,
Whose evil acts were covered up
Within the elder ranks
W is for the Watchtower
That did corrupt our minds
For if we’d kept on reading it
The truth we’d never find
X is for anXiety
That we used to feel
From trying to live a life
That never was for real
Y is for the Young ones,
Who’s innocence we took
By making them scared and fearful
From the bible stories book
Z is for the zero good
We got from all the hours
Of trying to sell the useless
Awakes and Watchtowers -

When Debating With Witnesses- Is Arguing Doctrine Beneficial ? Steve Hassan
by flipper inmy wife and i have been reading " releasing the bonds " by steve hassan and it makes some interesting points about assisting people to get out of any cult.
notice this excerpt from chapter 6 from the book.
hassan states, " it is also important to understand that in most bible -based cults, although the member is aggressively taught doctrine, it is not the doctrine that holds him in the group.

I agree with that. You will never debate anyone out of the JW's. But they have a belief that anyone that leaves is evil and will suffer. When you leave and are happier and doing well in life, it confounds them. I would only debate if the person was questioning and really open to discussion. 99.9 percent of JW's are not. Even when I was inactive and miserable as a JW, I would not have been open to the things presented here. Only after I left and began to think for myself did I understand.
