Most people on this thread seem to agree that there is a higher good. Most agree the 'Golden rule' is a good moral law. I think that these concepts and beliefs have been imprinted on us by our backgrounds, and that our internal constructs of good are not independent of our Christian background and culture. I think claiming to be part of a group that is more moral than Christians would discredit the source of your morals.

Moral Values of an Atheist
by hamilcarr insome thoughts spinning through my head .... what does it mean to be an atheist?
it means you cannot imagine your homosexual neighbor being slaughtered by a loving god at judgment's day, it means you don't consider the primitive tribe described in numbers 31 that slew midianite men and raped innocent virgins to be god's first covenant people, it means you don't believe mankind is so perverted that it is in need of salvation through a man who came 'not with peace, but with a sword', it means you have high moral values that apply not only to the members of your denomination but to all men.. h. .

Alpaca,
"you do the right thing simply because it is the right thing"
But what if someone else, even another atheist, disagrees with your view of what is 'the right thing'? What would make your view of 'the right thing' better than someone else's view?
--------------------------------------------------
I expect most people here get their morality from the society they live in. I expect most people here live in a society who's morals are strongly influenced by Judeo-Christian thought. -

Do You Believe The Majority of JWs Believe Everything They Are Taught?
by minimus inyears ago, nearly every jw were true believers.
even if they were considered weak in the faith, they accepted all the beliefs and views from "mother".
do you think today's witnesses accept everything as being the truth?.

I've found a lot of Jehovah's Witnesses are likely to disagree with some rules, such as not being allowed to have beards, or requiring a chaperone for dating, but they usually agree with the doctrines.

Dispelling JW Myths: Faithful and Discreet Slave
by AuldSoul inmatthew 24:45-51 who really is the faithful and discreet slave whom his master appointed over his domestics, to give them their food at the proper time?
happy is that slave if his master on arriving finds him doing so.
truly i say to you, he will appoint him over all his belongings.. .

"In fact, at the time JWs say Jesus arrived, the IBS were actively engaged in a work that can best be characterized as boldly and indiscreetly proclaiming a message Jesus told his disciples to reject."
And they still are! And everyone who doesn't join in following a message Jesus said not to follow, and joins them in teaching a message Jesus said not to follow will be destroyed at Armageddon. It's almost like Jehovah wants to slaughter everyone!
The 1919 date has bothered me for a while. If Jehovah/Jesus have been individually appointing FDS members since 33CE by anointing them, who did Jesus appoint in 1919? The Organisation? Doesn't that mean there's 2 slaves?
Good write up AuldSoul. -

JWs win early primaries - will they go on to win the nomination :)
by Qcmbr inhttp://blog.beliefnet.com/news/2008/02/jehovahs-witnesses-fastestgrow.php .
"jehovah's witnesses are the fastest-growing church body in the u.s. and canada, now with more than 1 million members, according to new figures that track church membership in the u.s. and canada.
although jehovah's witnesses ranked 24th on the list of 25 largest churches, they reported the largest growth rate -- 2.25 percent -- of all churches.

I thought the Pentecostals were growing much faster. Maybe they don't count as a 'Church Body'

When I read the first post in this thread, I wondered how long it would be before some "fundy" atheist would jump in with their own brand of evangelism.
Wildfell, personally I think your idea sounds perfect. I don't think you need any input. -

We don't celebrate holidays because ........
by RubaDub ini just can't stomach the time wasted in meetings and in the literature about the jw stand on holidays.. we try to explain why we don't celebrate christmas, mothers day, halloween, thanksgiving day, etc, etc, etc.. yet in reality, other than the memorial and anniversaries, we don't celebrate anything, regardless of the origins of the holiday.
if a new holiday was created encouraging people to be nice to each other, we still wouldn't celebrate it ... it would be worldly!!!.
all the time and energy put into determining the origins of certains days is just a waste of time.

The Jews celebrated holidays, you think Jehovah would have given his new people something to replace the Jewish festivals with. Holidays are good, they give people something to look forward to, something to enjoy in life.
