i am not a physics major, in fact, i avoided it like the plague in college.

so maybe someone on here can answer a question that i have.

i recently read that in switzerland there is a group of scientists that work on research, kind of like a think tank.

Translation of the Greek word "proskuneo"

can someone explain why the nwt translates this word as "worship" in 42 of the 60 occurances in the new testament while translating it "do obedience to" in the 18 instances where jesus is the recipient?

this seems so blatantly wrong.

do they think no one will notice or do they have an explanation?

My question was not one of doctrine. There can be no excuse to translate a word one way, when it suits one's doctrine, and another way when it does not. This is disingenuous, a lie plain and simple.

Bob1999--you stated the above. I would like to share with you some of the Hebrew and Greek words and their definitions directly from the Strong's Concordance:

Greek Words:

#3000--Latreuo--To minister (to God), i.e., render religious homage: serve, do the service, worship

#2151--Eusebeo--to be pious: i.e. (towards God), to worship, or (towards parents) to respect, (support)

#4576--Sebomai--to revere, i.e. to adore:--devout, religious, worship.

#4352--Proskuneo--to kiss, like a dog licking his masters hand: to fawn or crouch to, i.e. to prostrate oneself in homage, (do reverence to, adore)

Hebrew:

#5457--cegid--(chaldean), to fall down in homage (#5456 also)

#6087--atsab--to carve, i.e. fabricate or fashion; hence (in a bad sense) to worry, pain or angerL--displease grieve, hurt, make, be sorry, vex, worship, wrest.

#7812--Shacah--Prostrate in homage to ryalty or God: Bow down, crouch, fall down, humbly beseech, do obeisance, do reverence, worship.

There are hundreds of translations of the Bible. Different translators, likely governed by their theological views, tend to translate in such a way that it gives support to their notion of truth. I think you are wrong to consider it evil or disengenuous on their part to do so. That is a human thing to do. Likely, you do the same in areas of living that you apply the same lattitude.

However, I do agree with Bob completely--"that is called bias in translation".

Please believe me, I hate the WT Society. But there is a certain amount of "poetic license" for want of a better term with a hell of a lot of the Bible.

The WT doctrine re: Jesus is dishonoring, however their translation of the various words re: worship is within the parameters of reasonability.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I used to give a talk that the meaning of the Greek word "proskeneo" (sp) was used. In my research, if memory serves me, the root of the word is "doglike" and refers to the way a dog will cower before its master.

There is another word, something like "leuitral" (badly spelled) that had to do with more "formal worship".

I will check the condordances and see if I can add anything to that.

Will Armageddon be announced through the WT Magazine?

after seeing all the controversy on the fulfillment of matt 24:14, many are waiting for it to be printed in the wt in order for it to be true.. now, the latest wt is given to jws somewhere around 3 months before it's studied at the wt study (correct me if i'm wrong).

many, if not most jws don't bother reading the brand new magazines until it's time to prepare for the sunday wt study.. now, given that the wts has to print "new light" in the wt in order for it to be true, it would take three months if not more (printing, shipping time) to announce that armageddon has arrived.. isn't there something wrong with this picture?

i've been posting here for quite a long time, so long in fact that it just doesn't feel right that my wife isn't a part of it.

earlier today i created an account for her with the username heron, she'll know why.

i'm not sure if my wife will ever post here but i would feel much more comfortable knowing she is aware that i do.. this is the one post i am going to ask her to read.. so, i'd really appreciate it if you could say hello to my lovely wife.

1973 District Convention

i spent the weekend with some relatives.

they have an fairly extensive library of jw material going back 50 years in their spare bedroom.

i was looking at a few items when i found a program for the divine victory convention held in winnipeg, manitoba in 1973. the convention lasted 5 days.

I think I went to Houston Astrodome for that one. Inside, wasn't too hot.

I went to the 69 Round the World Internationals in Kansas City, Arrowhead Stadium.

That one was rough.

One moving part was the prodigal son drama, about the time he was praying and repenting, a thunderstorm hit and sorry to say it was very moving. Probably cost me an extra decade in that crappy place.

John Denver v Jay Leno

i 've heard snippets of this absurd urban myth about jay leno asking j denver to leave his show because he hated jw's.

but why on earth on a prime time slot would j leno start asking j denver about jw's?

and i don't think j leno is a particularly spiritual guy or wt supporter is he?

i am on this discussion board for support because i am meeting with the local jws to discuss scripture and hopefully plant seeds of doubt that will eventually lead to them leaving the organization.

you may also know that my mother was raised in a different cult, and was dfd for marrying my father (an outsider).

this caused great suffering in our family, and we were shunned for many years.
