here is my story: i'm an out, non-witness lesbian in love with an active jw lesbian.
she's very much in love with me as well but her guilt as a result of her religion is emotionally devistating her.
Is it unrealistic to believe we two could make it together?
Prolly. I have a friend who is lesbian and has enough problems with finding a stable relationship even without the JW complication. Lots of gay folk are conflicted about their orientation and feel guilty, in my observation.

Convinced they had the truth - 10 (I was also a child, uneducated, isolated from outside knowledge, not allowed to read other material, and brainwashed)
Convinced they do not have the truth - 10 (Mature adult with real-life experience, educated, read voraciously anything I want, brain is dry-cleaned now) The burden of proof should have been on the WTS - but they stacked the deck by means of intimidation, isolation, coersion, cult tactics, outright lies and blackmail.

At first glance, his writing is very unscholarly - unsupported, prejudicial claims, primarily anecdotal and without substantiation. (And most of it is probably true.)

Personally, I would be very cautious about using his stuff broadly to undermine the WTS. It just doesn't present very well.

But none of you guys seem to be doing anything to help other people. I am not complaining about my life now but it is different. I used to think that being a JW gave me the opportunity to be with the elderly and sick in the congregation and to be there as a support and example for others. Perhaps I need to do some voluntary work.
'Scuse me, eyeslice, but we didn't mention what we had for breakfast either, because that wasn't what you asked. If you specifically asked how we contribute to helping the people around us, you might have gotten that type of answer. You also gave us an example of what you were looking for:

Was this a set-up? Quite frankly, and this has been commented on ad nauseum, most of us didn't see much help extended in the congos toward the sick and elderly or others in need. So if that is what you experienced as a JW, you are in the minority.

Went to dinner tonight with Mr. Bee and another couple - nice evening. Tomorrow on our own - probably a yoga class for me, golf for him and a quiet evening with wine and a good dinner. Then Mr. Bee leaves for Oregon on Sunday for a golf tournament, I have my daughter-in-law's baby shower. Then I fly up to join him the following Saturday, then a road trip through Washington, Idaho, Canada, Montana, Colorado - or wherever our fancy takes us - exploring nature, museums, sights.
Is life less interesting? Not at all. Life is larger, much more interesting, with potential for pursuing travel, friendships, hobbies, reading, sports, culture, entertainment, personal creativity and introspection. Most of this was not possible as a witness. Being a witness was the most incredibly boring lifestyle imaginable.

At 23 and fading fast, I was visited by the CO and the PO. They asked me point-blank why didn't I marry the nice pioneer brother I used to date? I said I didn't love him. They both looked very sour, like - 'what's love got to do with it?'

it has been tossed around several times on the forum, and invariably someone pipes up that the wts will never do it because of the adverse effects on the numbers.
there is a glaring flaw in that reasoning.. the inactive are never counted as publishers.
the numbers that are reported are of active, reporting publishers.. if they disassociate every single person who is inactive and refuses to reactivate themselves, the numbers will not be negatively affected at all.
I know that if the elders ever told my parents they couldn't/shouldn't talk to me anymore on pain of getting DF'd, my parents would tell them to go to hell. I have a feeling that if many who go to the Hall (because it's something they've done for so long), were backed into a corner, it might be enough for them to leave the religion altogether.This is precisely what my mother did about 20 years ago.
