i have a speech to do for college speech class.
it is to be a persuasive speech and i figured a good topic would be; "are jehovah's witnesses rational?
" certainly with my background (being raised as one of jehovah's witnesses, then shown the ugly side while still an active member, and finally researching the truth about jehovah's witnesses) gives me a wealth of information to pull from.
Hi again, jayhawk1
Glad you like my quip! lol
Rather than we telling you what topics get JWD posters excited, how about you try to work out what would captivate your audience?
Are there more arts majors or science majors or health science majors in your class? Using what topics can you present the JW religion from the angle of their field of interest? What age group are you addressing?
It might be worth asking yourself if you will be able to sustain the interest of a bunch of young people for 10-20mins who have little if anything to do with a fringe religion such as the JWs. Can you sustain their interest in real estate for the prophets, Beth Sarim? Interpretations of the Gentile Times?

at the service meeting the other day the "friends" were given an opportunity to discuss the district convention (portland, or, june 30-july 2).
) people baptized at that convention.
a bigger number than i remember for at least a decade.
I agree with Robdar. I mean I wouldn't wish anyone to be involved in this religion. Well-informed, yes, but not actively involved.
There are so many cruel mechanisms designed to punish deserters. Some of those freshly baptized bros and sisters would have to pay a heavy price to get out. If only there was more that we can do....

Given that yours is a class presentation, I'm guessing that your speech is suppose to be 10-20 mins long. With that time frame in mind, it's probably best to limit yourself to 2-3 topics only. I mean each of those topics you've listed do have some chunky material: basis of beliefs, arguments and counter-arguments, impact on JWs, former JWs and wider community etc. Best to make it slim but spicy. Don't sacrifice delivery for content.
That's my two cents.

I think before we open our encyclopedias and think of fortune cookies and tight-knit family ties, and how these would be obstacles to the WTS tentacles, it is worth remembering that Hong Kong has a good JW base. Have you seen one of the WTS videos where they featured a district convention in HK? Not exactly a tree-house size club over there you know.
I know JWs have been able to establish themselves over there before the 1997 Handover, but we're not talking from the political angle anymore. I'm talking about how the Chinese culture does not necessarily give Chinese people immunity towards religion. Doesn't matter if their families have closer ties or that they respect older people more or that they have a friendlier view of religion (which isn't true for all Mainland chinese cos I've met staunchly atheist Chinese who feel religion is just a gimmick), I don't perceive culture as a strong defense against the twisted reasonings of the WTS.

i'm not talking about the time you gave the nasty elder a bleeding nose
back when you were still in the org, have you ever seen a trouble-maker

Gregor,
That was a very tragic end, man.
Dirk,
Poor thing must have been deranged as she was eventually baptised.
How on earth did they allow her to take the dip if she was deranged? I thought you can't do so if you haven't quite got all your marbles?? Or am I wrong?
Gee I wonder what would happen if I strapped a 50cm dildo to my head and walked into a meeting??

I also remember once, when a Bethelite (Bro.X) was visiting our cong, he brought an interested person with him. Now at the sight of this Bro.X, it appeared that this other brother was very agitated. During the meeting, edgy brother's wife was telling him to calm down. At the end of meeting, Edgy stormed out of the Hall, followed by worried wife and kids. But he hadn't left the KHall altogether yet.
So we were happily chatting, going about our business, when all of a sudden, this loud roar was heard outside the Hall. Bro Edgy was sooo mad, close to hysterical. He basically shouted out for Bro X to come out of the hall cos he wanted to settle a score with him. He was so hoarse that I didn't even know who he was asking for until Bro. Edgy stormed back into the Hall and punched and kicked Bro. X!!
Right in front of Bro.X's non-JW guest!! I think the guest was MORE freaked out than the rest of us. I mean, we were all shocked, but the guest was like wondering if he should call the police! Edgy was kicking and screaming as 2-3 brothers including poor wifey dragged him out of there.
I understood that Bethelite Bro X had done Edgy wrong somehow, but I didn't dig for the details cos back then I believed in doing all things for the peace of the cong.
Others didn't have such silly reservations however. LOL. The Pioneer Sisters News Network informed several neighbouring congs within the first 3 days of the aftermath.

Heya Gregor
What does it mean " he cuffed Bobby ass over teakettle down the aisle" when we remove the metaphor? Did he spank Bobby? Did he hurl the boy down the aisle? ?
Brother bellybutton ended up being removed
Removed as a result of this incident? That's a bit harsh isn't it, I mean the elder loved kids so his action toward Bobby must've been a reflex, right? No malice intended.

A rumour spread that Eve had Aids and was gay. When he found out about this (some of the youngsters asked him about it) he retaliated by chasing after the elders pinching their behinds.
ROFL. Let the punishment fit the crime eh, fts?

I think our repsonse to this question depends on individual interpretations of what "big field" means.
If one supposed that the question was asking whether we might see the 1.3 billion Chinese converting to the JW religion, the answer is blatantly obvious. NO! That is impossible. JWs will always be the minority in ANY country, let alone the most populous in the world.
But I interpreted that the question was asking if JW evangelism will thrive in China. And my answer to that is "Yes".
A government's hostility to a religious sect does not necessarily kill it. JWs thrive in Singapore where they are banned. They thrived in Indonesia too (the ban was lifted not too long ago). Need I mention the countries that were formerly the USSR?
And look at Falun Gong indeed! Have they been wiped out yet? NO! Sure you can decimate a good chunk of their members, but the greatest threat to religious zeal is not the edge of a sword, it is information. And that is another reason I am confident that China would be a good land for expansion: little is known about JWs. The same factors that drive the people to embrace Catholicism and the Protestant groups will aid the WTS in making inroads within the Chinese people.
