  Does the bible really agree with science?

  here's some food for thought, many jw's point out that the bible isn't a scientific text book, but when it comments on science its always correct.

  they site many examples to try and prove this.

  here's some you can throw back at them:leviticus 11:6 states that rabbits chew their cud.

  And, Sick.Of.Lies, could I just add -

  Have you noticed that although the WTS stops short of requiring circumcision for baby boys, they quite often cite references to try to show that this is a very healthy thing to do. IMHO this is just an ancient form of sexual mutilation - if JHVH wanted it cut off, why didn't he make it that way in the first place? Or, maybe the WTS thinks they have dumbed down the brothers so much that they can't keep themselves clean!

  And, how about the constant reminder that the law on eating pork was for the Israelites health?

  Barry - thanks for putting that thread up. Maybe what MF Richard was relating on the college/medical thing was the tradition your church has held for medical progressive thought.

  Didn't know if you wanted to go there, but could you comment for the benefit of the rest of us on the Millerite chronology (1844,1874) and the splinter group connection to JW roots? Is there an official position on that? And, of course, have you folks given up on chronology and time of the end things?

  Enquiring minds want to know!

  What's your favourite movie of all time?

  we had a weekend away a couple of weeks ago.

  i took a few classic dvd's along in case the weather turned sour.. so i watched ghost with demi moore, that pottery scene has to be one of my favourite ever..........gives me goosebumps!

  but it's not my favourite movie of all time/ i'm embarrassed to admit it, but ok i will, cause i'm with friends!

  Locks of Love--Can you ever imagine JWs doing such a thing?

  today hundreds of people are volunteering their hair for an org that provides wigs to cancer pts.

  the today show in nyc had a few folks allow their long hair to be cut for donation and there are hundreds in another locale doing the same.

  there are even little kids doing it!.

  I have to re-post a rant related to this subject:

  The Tammy Faye thing was just a joke, we all know Jimmie is buried under the end zone of the Giants stadium.

  On the sad reality side, though, was a sister that I knew in an adjoining congregation many years ago. She was an outstandingly attractive lady, but she was getting up into late 40 - early 50 age. So, she goes out secretively to have a face lift. During the operation, the anaesthesiologist somehow botches the job, and lets her go without oxygen long enough to put her basically brain dead like the Terri Shiavo case. Now, next of kin was a JW and of course they cannot let her go, so starts a long vigil in the vegetative state. What was even more sad was the often-repeated comment by many of the elders "see - this all happened because of this sister's vanity"...using this tragedy as a lesson to beat up on the women in their congregations on makeup and appearance.

  Another disgusting case I personally knew of was a very beautiful late 30's new convert who was platinum blond from when she started coming to the hall for about a year. She then shows up in a jet black full wig, and naturally gets hammered for it. She goes into a crying fit, and pulls it off right in front of the elder jerks, to show them that she is all the way bald. The platinum blond was also a wig; she was undergoing chemo-therapy for cancer and she thought the black would be LESS flashy than the blond. She had actually started coming to the meetings because of her condition (to please husband who was sort of an inactive witness guy) and because she knew she did not have much time left. She passed away about a year or so later. I wonder if the pig that did this ever feels guilty over it.

  Exactly right on the context issue. I really have discussed the blood thing vs. the sabbath thing with my friend Richard. We agree here that both groups needed a "stand-out" issue unlike most everybody else to mark themselves as unique. Even if they have to stretch the heck out of the bible to come up with it. So how do they really know it has to be the modern-day weekly Saturday? The JEWS told you?

  Well, at least their signature issue is probably not going to kill their kids. I still rate them only half-way on the whacked out cult scale.

  i went to the beach once with a friend of mine and judah ben schroeder.. i was not attracted to him sexually.. i was not attracted to my friend sexually.. the water was warm.

  my friend's mother was there but is dead now.

  he married an english girl.

  Judah Ben was of course the only begotten son of the magnificent Albert Schroeder who was my primary instructor at KM school in early 1970 in Pittsburg, PA. He was a fine example of special privilege for the higher ups - barely any Bethel people were even allowed to marry back then, let alone have a kid. His dad brought him in before the class at breakfast and introduced him. He was made to quote some whole page or two from the Watchtower and some verses from the Bible to prove how smart he was. He was maybe about 10 at the time.

  His dad was the same GB member Schroeder who once said (as another has posted here before) that 1975 did not quite happen because JHVH and Satan had a great conflict in heaven over the issue. Guess they fought each other to a standoff. This was also the same guy who commented on the importance of "LAW" in the Society teachings...not good enough to just study the bible, you also gotta have society LAW.

  I am surprised that Judah Ben has not already succeeded his old man on the GB. But, then - maybe he got fed up over the la-la and left.

  Yayyyyyy it's snowing !!!

  just thought i'd share my utter joy that it's started snowing again in surrey - hopefully it'll settle properly as it's dry outside.

  we had about 2 cm of snow last week but it soon went away with the sleet.. is it snowing anywhere else?

  come on, make me jealous with tales of 3 feet of snow in scotland !

  I have a pretty close friend who was raised in the SDA. He had to even go to their own parochial schools - the parents were hardliners. They eventually divorced with the father going to no religion and the mother going even more radical on Sabbath, etc. Richard (the son) quit as well about the time of Vietnam, played with Scientology after that, and now hates all conventional religion.

  Anyway, his take on them is that they do not raise to the scary level of Scientology or JWdom, but they may be hiding a few little secrets of their own. For one thing, they almost approach the JWs in the attempt to control education in some ways. For example, it was frowned on to go to college if you wanted to be a scientist, politician, or whatever...but it was sort of OK to go into medicine! They do not completely shun people like Richard who just quit, but they do give him what for on family holidays...you will die if you don't come back. I think they really believe they are the only ones.

  However, there is apparantly nothing like the rabid control from a central organization.

  Nevertheless, the JWs have a lot of 7th day DNA. I cannot forget that they were before WT with the failed end time chronology and fostered the splinter groups that got Russell started. They have just evolved further than Brooklyn and are avoiding making themselves look stupid again, IMHO.

  I also remember he played the JW father of a boy who needed a blood transfusion on Dr. Kildare way back in the 60's. Kildare gave the kid blood over the objection of the family and he lived.

  Scientology may be a good analogy - started by L.Ron, he wrote several sensational books and made himself a cult leader as much as anyone did in the 1950-2000 era. It was his cult from the early 1950s even though it didn't get big until later. (Kind of like with Russell in the days before 1900).

  Then, when L.Ron is senile and making some really far-out pronouncements, a new face strongarms out the old guard and installs himself. It is done under questionable tactics. (Kind of like a Rutherford in the 1920-1935 era.)

  What I see here are both cults, started by singular personalities, then taken over by absolute control freaks and running their course. Of course, JWdom is about 70 years ahead of Scientology.

  I think they started as (leader worship) style cults but are both now migrating into nasty totalitarian regimes run by religious politburo types. This is due to the lack of truly charismatic leadership as the deterioration continues past the founders. What I don't understand is how anyone could look at what started each and what they have proven to be all about and still miss the teachings of Russell or Hubbard.
