I suppose that's the beauty of using the "governing body" as a collective noun and a proper noun "Governing Body". I don't think a dub would ever admit a body of men were not guiding the organisation from CTR onwards... the FDS are confused into this mix. I'm not suggesting the GB are not a anymore than 'some self elected blokes' running the WBTS!

The great unanswered question - WHO chose the Governing Body to serve as representatives?
by cedars inwho is the governing body?.
put simply, the governing body purports to be a small group of anointed men (currently numbering 7) who represent a much larger group (numbering the thousands) of anointed individuals living on earth today.
in nearly every reference to their position of oversight over the worldwide brotherhood, the governing body refer to themselves as being representatives.... .

To look at this from a dub point of view, would they not assume that Jehovah chose them in 1919 when he chose the organisation as his 'channel' on earth. I expect that answer would do for any dub I know?!

What The 4/15/2012 Watchtower Failed To Mention
by mind blown inwhile you're busy not having "any" contact with your family and you need help, it's ok to contact your family because they are not going to help you.....

I must say I'm a little more forgiving than some here.
Personally if a friend or family member ever needed my help I have offered it freely, with or without prompting, dub or non-dub, trivial or serious. I left the Borg partly to avoid turning into someone so caught up in their personal world view, they couldn't see those around them as human beings.
Also, and secondarily I must add, I wouldn't want to give any JW the moral high ground in any situation. I prefer them (dubs) to see me, as a "worldly" person quietly going about my business helping those around me, regardless of their religion, creed, sect, etc... etc... living a moral life, brining up my kids with respect, love and kindness. Cheesy I know.
I know my kindness will probably not be reciprocated, but it is better to give than receive.

The gun is the SHUN: the JW's who no longer believe but cannot leave!
by Terry inthe insidious bind the watchtower religion places on their members is unconscionable.. holding family and friends "hostage" as an extortion strategy may be their most potent weapon of enforced conformity.. .
in effect, like an armed criminal who points a gun at you and threatens "your money or your life", the watchtower leadership.
holds the power to separate dissenting members from those whom they most cherish.

I would recommend caution. In my younger days I would have said not to worry about the cons too much, as the pros are too fab for words!
This may sound dramatic, but I now believe some are "too far gone" to be safely removed. One such case I've personally witnessed has coloured my judgement completely. A sister with two children encouraged to leave the Borg and ministerial hubby. Once out, to be cold, she could not cope. She had no friends, no family to help, no partner, no support structure... she wasn't exactly dancing through fields of pretty flowers enjoying her new found freedom. What's more as she grew up in the Borg she seemed to lack the ability to operate in "da real world". Making friends, joining clubs, etc... etc.. was alien to her... I wont describe the fall out - but it safe to say it has not been pretty, and I often ask myself 'would she have been better off staying in?'.
Also it's important to remember that despite "coming out", some may still have hang-ups for many years to come. Once out, old fears can weigh heavy, especially on those brainwashed from childhood - this can cause depression - I've seen this too! I personally, years after leaving, suddenly started having nightmares about Armageddon - what's even more strange is that I never believed the religion growing up - so the impact on a ex-true-believer could be even greater. More trivially, I don't know about anyone else, but for years I had an uneasy feeling on Tuesday and Thursday night, almost like I should be 'doing' something?!
I suppose what I would say is, if you personally are encouraging someone out of the borg, perhaps you should consider their support partly your own responsibility once the JW rug has been yanked from under them. Consider if they have other friends, or are they social creatures capable of making new friends. Do they have hobbies!? Other non-dub family members? etc... etc...
Some are very gung-ho when it comes to this type of thing, but from my experience things don't always turn out as you might think.

I personally hope they continue to spout this type of nonsense, I've always enjoyed it when dubs share 'experiences' (I love that term, never miracle, always 'experience'). It was just such an 'experience' that convinced my brother to leave the Borg.
A close friend of my brother’s in the Borg, had sadly, taken his own life. Then at the very next convention an experience was given about someone contemplating suicide, they were praying just before they were going to take that final step - when... there was a knock at the door. Guess who!? My brother was pretty damn sure his friend would have been praying his heart out before he did what he did... in no small part this lead to him escaping the Borg.
On a brighter note, I've laughed out loud before when listening to experiences (TM) at the kongdim hall. I remember one about a sister on the ministry, despite being hungry she didn't stop for lunch to ensure she covered all her territory that day. At the end of the day she was so giddy she had to sit down, her partner in crime was "very worried" about her. As she sat down on the pavement she noticed something on the floor by the bench - it was an unopened Mars bar (that's a chocolate bar). The moral? Trust in Jehovah he will see you right!
Brilliant. Can you imagine the Angel's face when Big J handed him a Mars bar saying "Hey Gabe, pop down with this bad boy, sister Miggins needs a sugar rush".
Anyone else got any cool "experiences"?

Wouldn't the predators on the ark have eaten everything by the time the 40 days was over?
by highdose inlet say noah did manage to get all the species into the ark... about half of them would have been predators and the other half natural prey.. are we going to belive that they went without eating for 40 days and nights?
or the ridiculous theory as the wt would have it that noah fed them nice tasty bales of straw which they happily munched on?.
and even if one of these two exhuses were true, when the animals were let out of the ark into a world now deverstated by a flood, then wouldn't they have continued eating eachother???

Errrrr Guys. This is a miracle! God just stopped the animals getting hungry and shoved a cork up their bums, simples.
Oh wait, or.... maybe it never happened.

Most Ridiculous Thing You've Ever Been Counseled On
by MrFreeze ini'm sure topics like this have already come up but they tend to get hilarious with the absolute absurdity that goes on in the kh.
i was once counseled for not shaving after two days.
i was also counseled by a sister for eating lucky charms cereal.

Isn't it weird... we all had 'counselling' when we didn't want it or need it in the borg. But, then when we 'fade' or 'pop' out... we're left wondering what the 'holy hell' is going on, usually without a clue where to start!
I was counselled for many things... but I suppose my best memory of being 'ticked off by the elders' was for fiddling with the central heating controls in the KH (I was about 16yo at the time)... having popped out for a much needed toilet break - I noticed the heating control unit on the wall.... turned it up to 35c and whacked the 1 hour boost button. It was summer. I told them I thought it was a light switch :o\
Oh, I also pinned up a politcal party flyer on the notice board for a laugh... that didn't go down well either. Obvisouly the elders aren't Labour supporters ?!
