I don't think it is deliberate in most cases. they see every thing through a pair of very distorted glasses. Remember all the cute illustrations, like how if you walked out of a very dark room you would not be able to handle bright light all at once? It's that type of thinking that justifies the fact that a new person doesn't get the whole story.

Do J.W.'s deliberately lie to new converts?
by hubert inwhen i showed my daughter a story of an old man who was df'd and shunned for asking questions about w.t.
doctrine, she said "he must have had a big sin".
so, this is what my daughter is being taught, that you have to have a "big sin" to be disfellowshipped and shunned.

What's The Difference Between A "Worldy Person" & JW???
by minimus injws tell their flock that they are superior to "worldly ones".
that they're better.
how would you refute that??

I would attack from a different angle, and make them identify clearly who is considered worldly. I would ask questions like these:
1. How do you define "wordly"?
2. Who is more worldly, an elder who secretly committs adultery, or an inactive person who supports his elderly witness parents?
3. Who decides who is worldly? Jehovah, or people?
4. If it's people, are they using their own criteria, or the bible's?
5. If it's Jehovah, then how can we be sure if a person is really wordly, or in "the truth"?
6. Does Jehovah judge only, or does he allow people to judge for him?
7. If an elder who secretly practices sin wrongly disfellowships a repentant believer, is that disfellowshipped one really wordly?
8. If a sincere elder does not disfellowship a person who unrepentantly practices sin, is that sinner really in "the truth"?
9. So can you really define who is "wordly" by their membership in an organization?

Good thread; I agree wholeheartedly. I was just telling my mom the other day the witness culture is a caste system. She ignored me and started talking about something else.
I have been at different places in that system; right now I guess I would be considered inactive and marked.

For those of you born in.....
by lonelysheep ini want to say how brave i think all of you are for stepping out of the jw's, even if it's hidden (those of you still going).
whenever witnesses would knock on our door, i always felt they were ok and just worshipping god in the way they felt was right.
i never knew it came with soooo much stress and shunning if one does not comply.

Thank you for the kind words. I was born in and did not even really question things until last year. I feel fortunate to have found the info on this site and others like quotes which gave me the whole picture.

Who was Jesus really?
by Spectrum in1. was he the son of god and some kind of god himself?
2. was he an extremely intelligent man that manipulated people and made himself appear to be fullfilling the prophecies about the messiah?
3. was he a dellusional nutter?

I personally don't care who he really was. I am only interested in the overall impression he gave, which to me was one of individuality. The impression I get is that he flew in the face of every ridiculous tradition and prejudice, and for that I admire him, whether he was a real man or a fictional character dreamed up by someone who longed to see those kinds of changes.

Can you feel the love?
by ringo5 inafter reading a 1952 watchtower quote about segregation that blondie posted, i thought i'd have a look at the newly resurrected and cloned quotes site to see what other gems there might be.
*** the golden age, july 24, 1929, p. 702 *** .
question: is there anything in the bible that reveals the origin of the negro?

Good thread. I was appalled when I found out that the society used to print such things, and that assemblies used to be segregated. It took days for that to sink in. There were always little things that bothered me about the org, but I always truly believed that as witnesses we were the only ones that truly didn't have racial barriers. I am ashamed for the org that there is such damning material out there. How many active black witnesses do you think have any idea what the society used to teach?

Blondie-
I gasped when I read your post. Emshawf (I don't know the spelling either, but I know there was an "f" sound at the end. He was our DO. He had chiclet teeth and talked in an up and down sing song voice. He was single when he died recently. Interestingly, he dated Teresa Graves long ago, who was on Laugh In, and they almost got married. I don't know why it didn't work out, but I found him quite interesting.

by stillAwitness inthe good news: i just saved a bunch more money on my car insurance by switiching to progressive!
(though i do miss the free talking duck aflac would send me once a year)
the bad news: it has just been announced at the kingdom hall today that as of now the watchtower is being translated into 152 languages instead of what used to be 151.
