It does seem kind of strange coming here and talking about stuff that most of us are glad to be well away from, but the difference between coming here and the 5 dreary meetings we all used to attend is no - one expects us here or hassles us when we aren't

AN E-MAIL I GOT from an anonymous Jehovah's Witness who read my story
by Terry inon randy's freeminds site my personal story: my life in jehovah's service appears.
it is sad that you publish information on jehovah's witnesses.. you even title it, my life in jehovah's service.. but you know nothing about what it means to be one of jehovah's witnesses.. .
so you should get your information from people, like me, who know.

How do you imagine the world 10 years from now?
by JH ini think that 10 years from here, we still won't be in the jw new system.
i also think that gas will cost 4 times what we pay now.. many more natural disasters will happen, like the tsunami and hurricane in new orleans.. there will be a financial crash .
living conditions will be harder, less clean water, more pollution.

I think that 10 years from here, we still won't be in the JW new system....... you are right there JH, there isn't going to be a new jw system. Personally, I would like to think that in 10 years there won't be a wt anymore, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part. Still, I can dream......

When I was in, I used to go out occasionally with some of the brothers. We all drank in moderation apart from one, who had 8 pints and a couple of double whiskies every time we went out. He was, and still is, an elder. He used to drink every day, and when we had sunday morning meetings, he used to look a bit glassy - eyed when he was conducting the watchtower study sometimes, yet nothing was ever said to him, and he kept all his privileges. Obviously, it does depend on your status in the cong as to what you can and can't get away with

Giving up drinking...........
by vitty in..............the tread about giving up smoking, made me think.
they usually can give you a time scale of how long it takes to give up smoking, i know its different for everyone, but usually 6 weeks and youve cracked it, 3 months and you hardly think about it.. what about drinking, is there a yard stick of how long it takes you to break the addiction.
ive decided to stop for a month, they reckon its a good test.. ive stopped drinking during the week( about 3 months ) and drink only fridays and saturdays, but i must admit by thursday im really chomping on the bit for a glass of wine.. so this week will be my first dry weekend for about 10 years, im excited but also worried that i cant do it.. the problem is i associate drinking wine, with relaxing and welcoming the weekend.. .

Brenda, my best friend was an alcoholic. He died two years ago at the age of 48, a complete wreck of a man. He had spells when he didn't drink, but always went back to it, and in the end it killed him. That is the main reason why I am not a big drinker, I saw the effect it had on him. His family aren't heavy drinkers, his main friends aren't, yet he was, from the age of about 25 onwards. I t definitely wasn't the environment he was brought up in that did it to him, he just got the addiction and that was it, his life pattern was set. I agree with you, it is an illness, I think any addiction is to a degree. I have just embarked on what I hope will be a successful battle with my addiction, smoking. Its tough, but I have to be determined if I'm going to make it. Like you with drink, I know that one cigarrette, at any time fro the rest of my life, and I will be back on it again.I wish you well, take care dedpoet xx

I quit smoking, wish me luck
by dedpoet inyesterday i quit smoking.
its something i have been thinking of trying for a while, and i finally got round to it.
it was a tough day and a sleepless night, i probably had a couple of hours, and i am under no illusions about today being any easier.

Thanks for all your good wishes. I have managed to get through the second day ok, but its been tough. If I make it I know it will be well worthwhile. I am expecting another mainly sleepless night, but I have a day off work tomorrow, so it won't be so bad. I'll keep you all posred as to my progress. Once again, thanks

I like a drink, but can take it or leave it really. I go weeks without alcohol (its 2 weeks since my last beer now), but I think I'll always have a drink now and then, in moderation though, its never been an addiction for me

Did Your Experience As A Witness REALLY "Damage" You?

I don't think that anyone who gets involved with a high control group like the jws can come out of it completely unscathed. I spent about 9 years in the cult, and when I left and went out into the world again my social life was virtually non existent, I really didn't know how to have one. That, and the knowledge that I had been well and truly duped by the jws were the most damaging things I sufferred. Now I do have an active social life, and am getting over the anger, albeit slowly, so I guess that at least the damage wasn't permanent
