22 fascinating maps that show how Americans speak English differently across the US
by blondie inhttp://www.msn.com/en-us/lifestyle/smart-living/22-fascinating-maps-that-show-how-americans-speak-english-differently-across-the-us/ss-bbwqtug?li=bbnb7kz&ocid=iehp .
everyone knows americans don't agree on pronunciations.. that's great, because regional accents and dialects are a major part of why american english is so interesting.. josh katz, a former ph.d. student of statistics at north carolina state university, published a group of awesome visualizations of professor bert vaux and scott golder's linguistic survey, which looked at differences in american dialects (via detsl on /r/linguistics).. his results were first published on the abstract, the nc state university research blog.
the complete set of katz's maps, updated with the results from more than 350,000 new survey responses, are compiled in the new book "speaking american," publishing october 25 from houghton mifflin harcourt.. katz gave business insider permission to publish some of the coolest maps from his collection..

If you were ever a waitress you have come across the soda dilemma on occasion. Guy asks for booze of choice and soda, soda? what kind? in my neck of the woods that could mean Coke, Sprite, etc... his booze of choice could have gone with any soda choices, he looked at me like I was a moron, naturally he meant seltzer. Growing up we had pop.
'Doggy bags' have also gone out of fashion, they are now boxes. We were in a different state a number of years back and I asked for a doggy bag and the server had no clue at all as to what my request might be.

I remember when my jw thought the internet should be used with caution even though he used it daily. It was never to be used for looking up 'spiritual' things! Now he is on his damn devices 24/7 sometimes. Naturally he got a tablet when it was suggested to be used in fs, blah.....

Revealing the wt "translators" now that gb are all over the place?
by carla inback when me & my jw were still discussing anything jw related we had numerous discussions about just who the translators of the wt's bible were.
(i knew, thanks to this site and others like it) the answer was usually something to the effect that they (the wt) didn't want to give 'honor' to mere men by revealing who they were and what their education was.
now that the gb are all over the place, youtube, etc... why not reveal the 'translators' and their educational background?

Using the term "Watchtower" when talking to a JW
by Sanchy inhas anyone else noticed how alarm bells go off inside a jw mind as soon as they hear someone that "is out" refer to the leaders of this org as "watchtower"?
i've chatted with a few friends now about my doubts and each and every time i've started using phrases such as "watchtower said this" or "watchtower did that", i can almost see their heads about to explode in anger, as if they've just realized they are talking to the lucifer himself.
some have even interrupted and corrected me by reminding me that it's not "watchtower", it's "god's organization".

It wasn't that many years ago when my newbie jw thought it was disrespectful to refer to jw's as jw's and now they do it themselves. Or maybe it is just my jw picking up my lingo from years ago? hmm.....

Circuit ASSembly low-lites
by FedUpJW inso in an effort to relieve some pressure here are what i term the low-lites of yesterday's assembly that i had to endure for the sake of family still in and my progressing fade.
apologies in advance for being pretty long winded.. these may not all be the actual words used, but the ones i use are close, and they pretty well say what was said from the platform.. right off the bat in the opening prayer the praises of the governing body were spoken.
thanking the g.b.

I hope they do have a new 'no news' policy!!!! My jw loves to watch news and then make the usual jw comment, "things are getting so bad, blah, blah, blah....."

where have the demons gone?
by aboveusonlysky indoes anybody remember some of the sensational demon stories jw's would tell back in the day?
i was a kid in the early 80's and i remember a few times hearing of people having real life encounters with demons.
for example, one sister claimed that before she became a jdub she would regularly talk to demons and they would even fix stuff like her washing machine!

My jw does not refer so much to 'demons' as much as 'evil', perhaps the word 'evil' has taken the place of 'demons'? although, come to think of it, over the years and even pretty recently he did toss some things because of them being 'demon related'. That is what family has told me, he wouldn't go there with me.

I was wondering about the AA meetings as well. Maybe he figured he was 'cast out' already and could get cleaned up and then get reinstated?

It is absolutely galling to me that my wife submits herself to this madness
by jambon1 ini've tried to get over this, i honestly have.
since i stopped my kids going to meetings, things have gotten a little better.. but knowing the content of the convention programme that she was subjected to on friday, it amazes me and greatly annoys me that she goes back for more, today.
for her to sit there watching those crazy, fear mongering bunker videos.

I have found it best not to discuss anything jw related at all, never. It keeps the peace. Thankfully your kids are not being indoctrinated!
It is difficult not discussing the craziness of jw-ism (I bite my tongue so often I am lucky I still have one) but after awhile they go to the meetings and most of the time they return to their more authentic self as soon as they are out of their jw clothes. They do get a bit weirder during convention/assembly weekends but that too wears off shortly. It is a strange dance indeed being married to a jw. From a psychological standpoint it is interesting to watch them switch it on and off, just wish I was studying it in a book and not from the front row in my own house.
As I have mentioned before, the house should be a neutral space and no jw literature lying about and in turn you do not leave apostate/pedophile news lying about. Works in my house.
