The old sweet ladies who were so "faithful" because they knew no better. They were not the gossippy types, they were the ones who baked apple pies without even thinking when there was a family in need. They are the ones who I cry for most at night because they know no better and don't have the confidence to question.

Regular pioneering for eight years where the need is greater (read: where nobody else wanted to go) led to meeting quite a few freaks and having some amazing encounters. My dh and I talk about these characters over dinner as if we were discussing a good novel we'd read.

The lady whose dead daughter flew over the farm.

The lady who tried to remove our demons.

The man who started peeing off the side of the step right in front of us.

Talk about dirty, why was it that the people who had the most filthiest living conditions wanted bible studies. I remember having to dab purfume under my nose on many of those cat-urine, garbage stacked up for weeks, never saw a vacuum homes.

I could go on and on...

Boobah... an acid trip for kids?

when i get up for work in the morning i normally watch a bit of news in bed before i start to move around.

the other day i was flipping through the channels and came across a very very strange show on pbs at 6:30 am (dallas channel 13) called boobah.

it is designed for very young children... and i swear it looks like an acid trip!

Ah yes, Boobah. The girls watched that very briefly before getting completely bored with it. Me? I just thought it looked like an un-cut penis, erect, dipped in kool-aid!

Your First Love...

My first love was from the "boy's home." A place set up for boys without parents or in trouble. I was in the 8th grade and my partner in science class (a real perv) told me that this Vietnamese boy was really into me, would I at least meet him in the hall? We met and that started 6 months of the most beautiful love poems and drawings I've ever received. I still have them 20 yrs later. We carried on through words as we were both too shy to talk face to face. He was orphaned and passed around. He had great aspirations. One day in field service the pioneer who took us out each week after school asked me to accompany her into the grocery store. There she told me that she had found one of his love letters that had fallen from my bag. She was giving me one week to tell my parents. I didn't and she did. I cried so hard because they made me break it off. I remember that it was over Christmas break and before the break he had made me this gold bracelet that he engraved with the words I love you, and then my special nickname. One of hardest things I ever had to do was to tell him that because of my religion, I wasn't allowed to write him anymore. It breaks my heart to this day. I hope he went far and was able accomplish his dreams.

Becoming a woman...

i remember when i was around the age of 10 or 11, there was a book that jehovah's witness parents used in family bible study that had two versions (one for male, one for females) or maybe there was one and it just had chapters and i am remembering wrong.

i do remember vividly having to endure the rather male dominated view of what happens when a young woman enters adolescence and what a young woman has to look forward to in her 'duties' as a loyal wife and mother serving her husband *gags*.

does anyone remember that?

Yeah, I can see that going off real well with my employees. "Oh, I'm sorry I can't tell you what to do today as I have my period and am unable to use my mind." Where in the hell did they get their f***ing research!!!!????

how do JWs justify having children "in the last days?"

in the years leading up to 1975, there was an implicit (if not explicit) discouragement of having children given the proximity of armageddon.

for the most part, this seemed to have been ignored.

my jw grandma now has great-great grandchildren.

I remember back in the mid-nineties when I was having a crisis within myself. I was pioneering with husband and we so desperately wanted children, yet the pioneers around us talked about children as if they were the devil's spawn.

I wrote a letter to the society asking for a clarification on whether having chidren was okay. I never heard back even though it was written in a very sincere way. It made me so angry that they wouldn't respond.

When we eventually did get pregnant, all of our "friends" that had hung on after we quit pioneering left us. We'd see them later and they would talk down their noses at us. It makes me physically ill just thinking about it now.

Another thing that really bugged me was my great-uncle. A faithful pioneer/elder in his 60's. One time we got him talking (I still love his so much) and when we asked him why he never married and had children he got a sad look on his face and said that he was following the direction of "mother". How very, very sad.
