There are several, this is one I only recently found out about..
I was in my second year at high school, and the fees had unexpectedly doubled from the previous year. We were barely managing to pay them before the increase, now it was impossible. The result would have meant I wouldn't be allowed to apply for the following year, and I wouldn't get results for the current year, making application at another school almost impossible.
There was one other JW kid at my school who went to a different congregation, he's dad got several brothers from the other congregation to put some money together, and they paid off my fees that year, and made a contribution towards the following year as well.
The downside to this was I had to try be friends with the guy, he being an outdoor good at sports person, back then I was the typical geek, with thick glasses & side parting. We never got along well..
Oh another time I was at a 'worldly' friends house the day after christmas (I was just getting out of the org), naturally the conversation got around to what everyone got for christmas, I said I got nothing. It was no big deal to me, I honestly didn't care and still don't care about christmas.. but they were completely shocked. An hour later my friends mom came and gave me an envelope with some cash in it. I had no idea what to do.. I stammered thanks very much.. it brought tears to my eyes later that day when I got over the shock and really thought about what they had done.
Now I try surprise people with gifts, like giving them a birthday gift a week or two before their birthday, when they don't expect it, it has much more of an impact on them...

What do you dream about?
by Glenmore ini suppose i shouldn't admit this, but darn it, i will.
for the past 6 years i have been a daily user of a certain illegal herb, the one that blocks your dreams.
in my defence i have chronic pain and it helps.

About a week ago I dreamt I was Lenin's bodyguard in Russia somewhere between the world wars, the whole russian government were having a massive feast in a room that was draped in velvet, and furs.. and a couple of old people where trying to get in, some sort of protest because they had no food to eat, and we (the bodyguards) had to kill them!! but this being russia, there where no bullets in our guns, so we locked them up in a cupboard, but they kept escaping somehow, so we kept locking them back in..
When the feast finally ended, after locking the old couple up at least 10 times, I had to escort some African leader to see Lenin, who was in his office at the top of some stairs. We were halfway up when air raid sirens went off, which turned out to be my alarm clock in the background.
easily one of the stranger dreams that I've had and remembered I wrote down as much as I could remember when I woke up.. -

this always works for me... drink half a litre of water before you go sleep, another litre when you wake up, and get some sort of exercise a few hours later, like sprinting down the road and back. it instantly kills any headaches you might have.. and leaves me feeling ready for another round the next night

by Preston inmy favorite is currently....the transfiguration of vincent by m. ward.

very addictive album, lots of catchy folk tunes, includes a great rendition of bowie's "let's dance".

This is definately not the best stuff I've been listening to lately, but its probably the best new stuff out there this year that I've heard. I'm split between the two..

Edited to add: ok its not their debut album, and it was released last year, but its good anyways -

"The Pixies - Where is my mind"
almost 4 years ago, I had just reached breaking point about being told that I was not doing enough field service, not going to enough meetings, not doing enough personal study, and inside I was thinking "I don't believe any of this" but not knowing what else to believe.. -

Who Does Jehovah Resemble?
by Englishman inas a small boy, i pictured jehovah as resembling finlay currie, the kindly old boy who played roles in solomon & sheba and the 10 commandments.. .
later on, probably thanks to paul hogans influence, i started to picture jehovah as resembling charlton heston.. .
i still picture him as a bearded gentleman, wearing a dressing gown and sandals, surrounded by billowing clouds.. then again if i think of the creator, or lord, he doesn't seem to be the same entity as jehovah.. strange, isn't it?.

To me Jehovah was unimaginable, a spirit creature who could take any form, invisible. Its not like we could fly into space and see him.. therefore he couldn't look like anything anyone has seen before. Still, I always thought of a bright light, like a lightbulb when I tried to think what he could look like. Maybe thats why I never "loved" jehovah, I always attached an inanimate picture to the concept of god.

This is a real concern: Should Shari'a Law be introduced into civil courts?
by azaria inhere is an excerpt from the first site.. premier dalton mcginty is considering allowing an islamic court to resolve domestic disputes among the muslim community in ontario by applying sharia law, a 1400 year old system of religious law.
the plan was proposed by the islamic institute for civil justice and is vehemently opposed by the muslim canadian congress, the canadian council of muslim women and by several legal and women's groups.
ontario's former attorney-general marion boyd is hearing from both sides of the issue while attorney-general michael bryant is already busy looking at ways to have it up and running this year.. http://www.listenuptv.com/.

I know that in the northern partts of Nigeria they have Shari'a courts, its helped fuel long running battles between christians and muslims in that country.
How extreme would the laws be? Can you imagine any of the following happening in the US?
""On Monday this week the case against a 23-year-old man, Jibrin Babaji, who was convicted of sodomy after confessing to molesting three young boys, was thrown out on appeal, after a sharia judge ruled there should have been four witnesses.""
sounds way to familiar... -

The motivation behind the event, besides the world record, was to encourage the more liberal use of pillows on campus, especially in lecture theatres where they could be put to good use.
There were twice as many people watching the fight than taking part, probably because they didn't have pillows. Maybe next time we'll get the record.
I'll upload pics as soon as I can find some...
