Perhaps a too literal interpretation of the parable of the rich man and Lazarous. As well as Gehenna which is called the lake of fire. I think..

Your Ideas On The Bible?
by shamus inso, what do you think about the bible?
is it really ispired of god?.
i am strongly believing that the bible is nothing more than folk-tales, half-truths, and suggestions by man.

Well, to be honest, it also takes a lot of faith NOT to believe in God or the Bible. To believe that the huge variety of life on Earth just came about through a big bang or something takes a hell of a lot of faith in my book. Plus, although I do not know what I really believe, I don't want to turn my back on God or the Bible just because I don't want to go to meetings or be a JW any more.
God and the Bible do not necessarily have to be related. Look at all the faiths that believe in God but not the Bible. Just because I don't follow the Bible doesn't mean that I don't have a strong faith in God. It also doesn't mean that I believe in evolution either.
What gets me is the blind faith that people place in the bible, I know a christian girl (not a dub) who is totally lost unless she can think of a scripture that applies. She doesn't think for herself, she lets a book rule her life. You can be a good person without giving over your free will to an ancient text. I respect the bible as an old book, and as an important religious document to many, NOT as the basis for my faith.
The final straw is the way the dubs always quoted "all scriptures is inspired of God" that was written about what was scripture AT THE TIME. And it didn't apply to Paul's letters which were not scripture until later, and probably more books though I have never listed them all. Yet the dubs apply that scripture to everything.
I also read numerous sites that showed contradictions, things like the enumeration of tribes. You would think a record inspired by God would not differ so drastically from one place to another. Even the gospels contain factual contraditions, though the Greatest Man Book was always careful to dodge around these points so as to present an account that always agreed.

Survivor Finale Tonight
by Stacy Smith ini'm packed for vacation so i can now prepare myself for the season finale.
who's going to win the big bucks?
i'm pulling for darrah but anything can happen.

Mysterious
I want Darrah to win. Jon is a dirtbag, lil is a idealistic wimp, and sandra has a big mouth. That being said, as long it's NOT jon I don't really care.
Personally I can't wait to see the reunion show. I think Rupert is going to tear a strip out of someone.

Losing the Truth in Bible Translations?

there is a line in a smashing pumpkins song that says "something always gets lost in the translation.
" how true of a translation of the bible do you think you can find?

For instance, what if there were a Hebrew or Greek word for an idea that didn't exist in English?
I remember a watchtower a few weeks back that was on loving kindness..that was the whole point was them trying to convey the meaning without having an English word that was equivalent. Maybe someone else can remember more..I was um zoned out.

Blood Type and Personality
by Mysterious inthe other day dad was telling me about how the wts used to say that the personality was in the blood.
today mom brought home the latest magazines (didn't look at the date) and in the "in our next issue" box there is an article asking if our blood type determines our personality.
maybe they're going to revisit the issue, i understand they never retracted their previous view on the subject.

I just searched the web to see if I could find anything. Now mind you I have not read the WT article, nor do I know what angle they will take. Though if I had to guess I'd say they would say blood type does not determine personality and everyone should cultivate the Christ-like personality.
Anyway found this from http://www.cascadebloodcenters.org/fyi/002.htm
Your Blood Type Personality
According to Japanese researchers, certain personality traits correlate to specific blood types. What do YOU think?
TYPE O You want to be a leader, and when you see something you want, you keep striving until you achieve your goal. You are a trendsetter, loyal, passionate and self-confident. Your weaknesses include vanity, jealousy and a tendency to be too competitive.
TYPE A You like harmony, peace and organization. You work well with others and are sensitive, patient and affectionate. Among your weaknesses are stubbornness and an inability to relax.
TYPE B You're a rugged individualist who's straightforward and likes to do things your own way. Creative and flexible, you adapt easily to any situation. However, your insistence on being independent can sometimes go too far and become a weakness.
TYPE AB Cool and controlled, you're generally well-liked and always put people at ease. You're a natural entertainer who's tactful and fair. But you're sometimes standoffish, blunt and have difficulty making decisions.

How Have You Regained Your Optimism (if you have)?
by bisous inmy experience in the jws and now that i am out is i am robbed of most of my optimism.
while in....we were taught fear and 2 choices....eternal life on earth under much the same administration which was full of drudgery, judgement, motivation by guilt....or....death.
period.

I've become a lot more caring about the world around me. Before I used to just take it at face value that God's kingdom would "fix" all the problems like diseases and pollution. Now I realize the importance of everyone doing as much as they can to help.
As far as optimism goes, there are good things that happen and it's important to remember that no matter what. Just having the opportunity to learn and to grow as a person is enough to be optimistic for me.

Are You Intuitive?
by darkuncle29 inhave any here had experiences they'd be willing to share?.
do you have a sense of intuition?
or is it more of a 'hit or miss' thing for you?.
-
Mysterious
I used to score very lowly on intuition when I was a dub, but my score is actually fairly high now. Most of my intuition is more perception though, like being able to predict when someone is going to poke their head around the corner from background clues and such.

So called "Theocratic Warfare"
by Mysterious ini've heard others talk about it but i've never been in the middle of it before until now.
mom was peeved at me for not being very theocractic (not doing anything wrong, just not being dub enough) and she started talking about how it was with my dad.
she totally spun a tale to me about how he slowly drifted away.

Mom was peeved at me for not being very theocractic (not doing anything wrong, just not being dub enough) and she started talking about how it was with my dad. She totally spun a tale to me about how he slowly drifted away. I *know* that's not true, he told me what happened! Apparently I'm not even allowed to know about my own father.
She also lied when confronted with a documentary on the pedophile issue. She said it hadn't made her RV stop studying, but that was the cause. I knew that but she lied to dad. When I told him what really happened we figure it was just another case of "theocratic warfare".
I'd love to catch her at it, especially the one about dad. It just makes me angry.
