    Divorce for emotional abuse?

    by somebodylovesme in

because of a recent family situation (always a good time!

), i've been in a debate with a jw relative about whether the society permits divorce (without remarriage) where there is emotional abuse.

this relative swears the literature has said that a person can leave her spouse where there is emotional abuse, but that she cannot remarry.

Excellent. Thanks for the perspectives -- and thanks for the literature, Blondie. I knew I could count on you!! At least if anyone in the congregation shuns this person for getting a divorce, she can point that out that article. (Note that the person I am arguing with is not the one getting the divorce ... long story ...)

    Thanks!!

Because of a recent family situation (always a good time!), I've been in a debate with a JW relative about whether the Society permits divorce (without remarriage) where there is emotional abuse. This relative swears the literature has said that a person can leave her spouse where there is emotional abuse, but that she cannot remarry. But the Watchtower's website just says this:

God's Word does not encourage separation as a way to solve minor problems. But a wife might choose to leave her husband if (1) he stubbornly refuses to support his family, (2) he is so violent that her health and life are in danger, or (3) his extreme opposition makes it impossible for her to worship Jehovah.— 1 Corinthians 7:12, 13 .

Can anyone point me to the literature on this? Anything on emotional abuse? (Because the above certainly makes it sound like, hey, even physical violence isn't enough -- he has to be so violent that his wife's life and health are in danger. )

For the record, I fully support divorce where there is emotional abuse (especially in the situation about which this dispute arose). I'm just tired of the hypocrisy of this group saying different things out of each side of its mouth and I'd like to know what the "official line" is supposed to be so that I can argue intelligently about it.

Of course, I've no idea why anyone would want to hang out in a religion that says that once her husband beats her (or emotionally torments her) and she leaves him, she is never allowed to get married or date anyone ever again. Geeez.

    Thanks in advance.

    good film.

what i really respect about it is it is no hollywood version of what happened on that day.

there is sparse use of music to try to pump up your emotions.

I know this is irrational ... but I have always (since before 9/11) been terrified of flying. I've only flown a couple times in my life. I have to get on an airplane in a few months ...

I told my husband that if he wants to get me on an airplane, there is no way I can watch this firm. Just thinking about it makes me anxious. As it is, I am going to have a terrible time convincing myself not to plan for my death before stepping on that airplane ...

    *sigh*

Is there new light on separation/divorce?

i had a chance to thumb through the bible teach book (which was a waste of fifteen minutes of my life that i'll never get back ...) and i had a question about the section on family life.

i believe it stated that separation was allowed in some extreme situations (not named), but that divorce was only allowed in cases of fornication..

i was never a jw, but i'm currently watching a jw family member go through some crap in their marriage.

    Hi all --

I had a chance to thumb through the Bible Teach book (which was a waste of fifteen minutes of my life that I'll never get back ...) and I had a question about the section on family life. I believe it stated that separation was allowed in some extreme situations (not named), but that divorce was only allowed in cases of fornication.

I was never a JW, but I'm currently watching a JW family member go through some crap in their marriage. My question: does the Society "allow" divorce in cases of spousal abuse? I thought for sure they used to. But that book excluded any mention of abuse when discussing divorce.

    Thanks in advance --

You mean to tell me, normal people don't get married at 17 or 18?

    by free2beme in

as a witness, most if not all of my friends were married by 18, with many woman married by 17. it was so normal, that when i left the religion and met all these people married in their 20's and later, that it seemed like they were starting late.

i actually was a late person in getting married, i was 23. i remember being one of the few people my age in the congregation, not married yet.

i actually remember thinking, where am i going to find someone to marry, that is not yet taken.

Depends on where you're from, too ... Actually, young marriages were the only thing Witnesses had in COMMON with the rest of the world where I grew up. :) Small rural area where everyone lived on a farm and there were 10 students in the high school graduating class -- people either got married or went to college right after high school, and for most, it was the former. (And I graduated from high school in the past five years.) I wasn't a Witness, but well over half of the young people I knew from my hometown got married within the first year or two after graduating high school.

So hey -- in some parts of the country (US, I mean), Witnesses are downright normal!! *gasp*

    cheers!
