I have no idea what to buy.. I keep thinking about that. I'm not sure who to buy for.. or how much to spend. This is all so new to me.

A lot of friends of mine growing up in the circuit left when they got out on their own. They just attended meetings and assemblies because they had to. I've seen a lot of my friends children do the same. I wish I had left when I graduated but I was a good girl, obedient and never questioning and stayed in. Then worked hard to try and keep my ex in the 'truth' and true enough, the minute we broke up he stopped being a JW. And yet it still took me 10 yrs to get out after that. Really it was quite by accident. I got sick a lot last year and started missing meetings, and then because of a personal problem with my husband (divorce pending) and his treatment of me, I refused to attend and be a hypocrite that we had a marriage.. and then when I kicked him out, he blackmailed me.. if any one of those things had not happened, thus breaking the chain, I might never have been away from the meetings long enough to start to think for myself, instead of just following orders... and rules.. and staying that good little girl..

how sad. Some take it to such an extreme. I can't believe she couldn't send you a picture. The thing is some witnesses are more liberal (as you say your mom is) and others take it to such an extreme that they are barely tollerable and have no idea that the hurt they cause pushes ones farther from this religion.
Is there any chance your mother might share some pictures with you?

Marking.
by Englishman ini've heard the expression a few times here but have normally not taken much notice.
i've been exited for 31 years and 4 months, well before the onset of elders, reproofs and marking.. i understand the first 2 but am all at sea about the the third.
someone please tell me exactly what "marking" is and how one becomes marked or a marker.. or markee!

well I just left a few months ago and I was under the impression that only individuals could mark and that it wasn't the congregation. I guess I could look it up on the cd.. since I do have the 'latest' one.. although to be honest, I've had little interest in caring what their stuff says lately.

The Elder Trap.
by Englishman in(i posted this on the kh thread, but that thread has descended into a squabble.
i think it's worth a thread of it's own).. "anyone who thinks that this place is similar to a kingdom hall with elders in control has no clue as to how the commercial world operates.
anyone who thinks that this place is like a kingdom hall controlled by persons with elder-like tendencies is probably going to struggle to hold down a job, make friends other than with those who feel the same way, and will always be struggling against the tide.

There is no comparison here as to being in a KH. While it is true that no matter where we are we should treat people with respect which is something we would have been expected to have done in a KH. That is more about being a good person, plain and simple decency. For one who has left the JW, yes we might feel rebellious, but that does not mean we can have chaos around us and have people around us by choice. I look at the mods/admins here and see how they too were once in the religion but have left, so why would we want to take out on them or compare them to elders. That is a huge insult. Really, coming here is like coming to Simon's home along with his family of relatives (other mods/admins). Would we go to someone's home and trash the place after an invite for dinner?
What we need to remember is that if we have anger towards the elders for the control that was in our life, is that our anger is on them, not on the world. Other wise how can we go forward and have a decent happy life.

What is the thing that keeps you going?
by Sassy inyerusalyim
started a thread about not feeling well and asked what others biggest complaints were right now.. so i got to thinking, what is the opposite?
what is the one thing that gives you a reason most to smile and get out of bed in the morning.

Sorry you are not feeling well Yerusalyim.
My biggest complaint? Ever since I decided to leave the JW, my hair seems to be falling out.. guess I am going through stress.. AND a jw nosey keeps giving out my phone number to casual old JW friends to call and bug me. I don't answer the phone but they keep leaving messages. I feel very harassed. Going to move and get a new phone number... no forwarding address...
