defender of truth: Seeing as Mr Stewart listens to you and responds promptly, would you mind taking a look at the email I sent him.

I think that Mr. Stewart listens to everybody - I don't think I have a "special" line to him. Eh...for all I know, it could have been one of his assistants that responded to me! That seems the most likely - I am sure Mr. Stewart is really busy.

The links that you posted do contain information that the WTS does not "obey secular authorities" in matters of child abuse which is valuable in refuting what Spinks and others have claimed.

Has anyone else sent those links in? I don't want to waste the Commission's time with a repeat of information - it is somewhat off topic to what I have been commenting on about the hearing so far. I am going to pass on that for now and wait to see if someone else has already addressed that with the Commission.

If anyone does send the info in, though, it would be best just send the links with a brief description. Mr. Stewart has proven to be very competent in formulating questions and I would respectfully leave the questioning up to him if he felt the material was relevant.

I have a sense that the Commission does have that information - there have been many interested people who have sent information on to them.

So...has anyone sent those links?

I have to confess, though, that I couldn't resist having an open email address for Mr. Stewart and I have availed myself of that privlege a few times already during the hearing. Lol! I can't help myself...but I am so grateful to have an opportunity to correspond with such an admirable person.

Brighid: OMG! I can't wait. I have this feeling it will bring some real healing and some closure. "Worldlies" have no idea what these people (the GB) symbolize to people in the organization (they're literally godheads in a way) and so actually seeing one of them being brought to task for criminal and inhumane policies, by secular authorities will be so incredibly powerful.

Yes. Powerful indeed. An opportunity that many may find will be a personal healing of some kind.

I think of the "panopticon", a physical structure that was adopted to keep control inside of prisons and how it is used as a metaphor for power structures - how the "eye" in the tower can control large groups of people through a central location. Now, we have the chance to reverse the gaze of the panopticon.

Isn't technology wonderful? :)

steve2: There is absolutely no evidence that when a subpoened party appears via videolink, an inquiry is in some way prevented from conducting a thorough inquiry.

I know that. However, there is certain a justice in making him 'face' the public - not being allowed to hide behind a video link, when it was his policies that forced victims to face their abuser. So, too, should he have to show his face.

I am not refering to the actual legal process or saying that it is deficient in any way - I am saying that we, as victims, want to see him give his evidence. Some of the victims of the WTS' judicial process would like that consideration.

What bothers me about Jackson giving testimony via video link, without his face shown, is that it reminds me too much of how child victims are handled in the court system. Children who are victims of sexual abuse often give their testimony in that manner - so that they don't have to face the accused.

Jackson is not the victim here - there is no reason that his face cannot be shown. I don't object to the video link - I just want to see his face when he gives testimony. I want him to feel naked, knowing that the eyes of the world are on him. Not just the ears of the world - but also the eyes.

Eyes have power. The power of the gaze. I want the WTS' power that they have held over everybody for so long - through their system of surveliance and record keeping - turned back on them.

I want it to be our turn to look at them.

I am all for requesting that the live feed show the video link. I want to see Jackson's face.

After all, it is Biblical, isn't it? For the accused to face their accuser(s)?

Just think of the countless numbers of victims who were forced to face their abuser - so, too, should we be able to do so. I want to see the abuser face to face. Or, at least, his face...hell, I would let him look at me, too, while he testified. That would be satisfying.

Maybe in the future the GB will allow "fractions" of wine to be sipped. That might bring up the attendance at the Memorial.

Questions for current and former elders re giving evidence

are you concerned that you may end up being called to give evidence for past involvement in judicial committees to future inquiries?

Marvin: I would welcome a law that requires all present and former Watchtower appointed elders to immediately report instances of child molestation they are aware of to secular authorities. They'd get a god-damned earful from me, and they'd be shocked.

Do you need a law to require the reporting of a known crime?

If you are aware of a criminal act that was committed in the past, are you not obligated (morally, at least) to report it even if there isn't a "law" to tell you to do so?

I dunno...maybe it is just me...but, I have reported suspected child abusers to the authorities in the past and I won't hesitate to do so again...and there wasn't a law that told me I had to. I did it because it was the right thing to do. I did it because it may have stopped another child from suffering abuse. I did it so that the police could at least put the suspected child abuser on their radar screen.

Just because there isn't a law that specifically requires ex-elders and present elders to go to the authorities with historic child sex abuse, doesn't mean a person can't go and make a statement to the police anyways. For all you know, that statement may be what the police need in order to proceed with an ongoing investigation.

And besides, if it was a historic case, it means that the perpetuator is still at large, and still able to continue victimizing children.

Why wait for a law to be put in place that demands you report a known crime? If a former elder is aware of a child abuse case that wasn't reported to the police, what is holding them back from reporting it now?

Maybe if all the former elders who are aware of a child aubser in the JWs went and made statements to their local police, a child somewhere could be saved from experiencing the same kind of abuse we have heard from the victims who told their stories to the Royal Commission.

Can JWs be police in Australia?

hi everyone, i'm new here, i've been following the rc reports, and i was hoping you could help, my question is are jw allowed to be police, i heard the jws saying in one report with enthusiasm that they had jw in the policeforce.

and would there be any conflict from the force with any of their teaching, that would be contrary to duties..

It was Spinks who claimed that JWs were on the police force. He said that JWs were in "every level of the police force" in Australia.

I don't believe Spinks - he is a liar.

I cannot imagine that "every level" of the police force has JWs in it. Impossible. Unless, of course, by "every level" he meant that the JWs had the cleaning contract for every floor in the police building.
