This topic of a substitution atonement component to the ransom (Jesus for Adam) was why Charles Russell split from Nelson H. Barbour (co-publisher of Herald of the Morning) and started to publish Zion’s Watch Tower and Herald of Christ’s Presence (July 1879, first issue)
This can be shown with Proclaimers pg 46-47, but a better job is done by M. James Penton in Apocalypse Delayed pg.23-24. He explains it in a balanced way, in greater detail, and above all - Cites his sources in an index.
One aspect not covered by WT literature that Penton shows, is how certain aspects of this Ransom doctrine lead to on of the big splits among the Bible Students. The so-called "New Covenant Schism". Apocalypse Delayed pg 40.
