For me it was that I (a 10 yr old only child) should have absolutely no friends, this being preferable to having one pretty decent worldly kid as my friend, I suppose (sarcasm) that his basic joy in life could rub off on me :0)

What is the most bizarre counsel you received as a JW, from a JW?
by Funchback inthere were many addressed to me.
for example, i once had a sister tell me i was gambling because i liked playing skill crane (the machine where you have to try to pick up prizes like stuffed animals) at the arcade.
i then fired back a her: "you saw the r-rated movie 'backdraft.

Why do they flee and hide
by eyeuse2badub insomething that has often struck me in my morning musings is: why should “god’s people” ever need to hide or flee in fear?.
there are numerous accounts recorded in the bible, both ot and nt, where prophets, kings, apostles and others have either been told to flee and hide or have just experienced that normal human feeling of fear and have fled and hidden instinctively.
even recently, the wtbts has produced vivid images in the wt magazine and videos of “god’s people” hiding out in bunkers to avoid detection.. is it just another broken promise from jehober that he will “without fail” protect “his people”?

If you asked a knowledgeable jw they might tell you about Christians fleeing Jerusalem in 66 CE and finding refuge in the hills of Perea, this was them being obedient to jc's instructions to "flee when you see Jerusalem surrounded by encamped armies"
Nothing about bunkers though, maybe jws are expecting updated instructions, new light no doubt (I find their thinking in these matters rather troubling, think Waco)

Whats in it for them?
by Moster ini have been out for nearly 40 years now - baptized at 14 (although not to the org), but faded away.
but i am wondering about this:.
aside from the obvious power they wield, what's is in it for the gb?
-

They have been Born Again,;;;
This means they've been walking around feeling quite special way before being in the GB,
Over millions of others
Their abba father has approved of them,
Must be a wonderful feeling if you believe in such things,
I don't,
I call it arrogant religious delusion,
World history shows that this can motivate a person to do some interesting things,

How do you feel when people quote an inspirational or lovely passage from the bible?
by stuckinarut2 ina thought occurred to us today about how christians, including witnesses love to quote some lovely passage of the bible as proof of god's love, or the value of the bible.. but just because a small passage or sentence is quoted doesn't mean the whole book is to be valued.. for instance, there may be a nice sentence or comment expressed in the passage of mein kampf, but would that make the book or it's author worthy of quoting or following?
the entire book and its message needs to taken into consideration!
(obviously that author had genocidal tendencies and disturbing ideas).

How do I feel? Sick
I don't care how lovely the verse, and neither would a Jewish person when listening to someone recite from Mein Kampf

UK Terrorists attacks
by Phoebe ini don't know if anyone has talked about this yet, forgive me if they have.
but i am just so, so sad that yet more innocent lives have been so brutally taken.
we've now had three attacks in three months and there has been countless terror attacks stopped by the police.. my jw acquaintances see these attacks as proof the end is near.

Many people understandably seek hope,
Jehovah's Witnesses prey upon these people,
It's important to realize the difference between hope and
False hope

by rathernotsay inhey guys, looking for some advice with what to do with my jw wife that is simply ignoring my wishes/demands.

There's "loyalty to Jehovah" and "Jehovah first" talk going on constantly in person and the publications,
This is regularly applied to as "THE RELIGION first" over everything and everybody (including self)
This is applied and rationalized differently by every jw,
Her deceipt re pioneering sounds like she's rationalizing "loyalty to Jehovah over loyalty to hubby,"
If you tried to curtail her Witness activity enough, they have a rule on the books that she can leave you on the grounds of "absolute spiritual endangerment" (Everyone applies this differently),
I'm not trying to scare you but just give you a heads up, it's a weird wonderland in there,
All the best,
Write as often as you like,
We like to help out where we can,

We do sound like a cult
by notalone in"we do sound like a cult..." so in the last few conversations i have had with my still deeply in friend she has mentioned this a couple times when lamenting things that don't seem right.
she has a relative that left and is telling everyone jw's are a cult.
she is very defensive and deeply disturbed by this accusation.

Ironically, it was an an awake cover article in the 90s on the subject that made me start to think "cult" I don't even remember the defensive rhetoric, but I DO remember a connection that I had not thought about before: jws a CULT? hmmm
What made me believe that they are a cult were the groups of 2 elders trying to hunt me down to investigate my non belief, where else do you hear about such a thing,
They're a Cult alright,

Talk to my Dad about beards.
by LovingLifeNow inso i spoke to my elder dad the other day, and he asked if i still am sporting a beard.
i said yes, then i said, "i thought the society said its ok to have a neat trimmed beard now?
" he said "no, no, no..if you read the article , it says in countries where it is accepted" so my response was "ummm, its pretty accepted here in america"..which he says "it reflects your spirituality" "if another wittness saw you, they would know you are weak"...i was like, "ok, i don't get it, and i follow christ/god, not men..." then he said in his hall" if a brother came in with a beard , he would not have privelages" then i just gave up, and tried to change the subject..ugggggggggg if these people would just listen to themselves , they would see the sillyness of there teachings...

Asking a Jew about the Name "Jehovah"
by David_Jay injehovah's witnesses...that's the trademark of the religion, the use of the name "jehovah.
" if there is anything jws and non-jws can agree on is that this one thing sets them apart from everybody else.. i have only had witnesses come to my door less than five times since i left in the 1990s.
i guess they don't work the territory i live in often, or perhaps after that first time (which was still after the year 2000) they have marked the words "jew who knows a lot" or something in their notes on my address.

Feeling Alone. Need Emotional Support.
by Doubtfully Yours inplease chime in if you're one of my kindred spirit that happens to literally be trapped in due to strong family/friends ties, or plain fear of being abandoned in old age.. although leaving the org is my ultimate wish and desire, fear of the unknown, fear of how it would change my family dinamics, plain fear alone paralyzes me.
how do you cope in this difficult situation?
dy.
