its interesting how 1914 is hauled out as proof, because it supposedly is marked by world war 1.

world war 1 started in june, but the "gentile times" supposedly ended in october. in fact, the society disavows any link between the two dates (there was a 32 page booklet that talked about that specifically, that the two events were not causal)

this is usually convinently forgotten from time to time though.

    ithinkisee,

: She said, "These are all great questions. We should ask somebody about them." (She actually said this a few times throughout the night.)

well done. be careful though. you can find yourself hauled before an unsympathetic elder body soon. if you love your wife, i hope she stand firm with you. when the elders started in on me, i said "I am learning as much as I can about the Bible. I want to be a better Bible student!" It's difficult for them to argue with that rationale. I wish you good luck!

(PS when the elders a few years did finally DF me on trumpted up charges I at that point didn't care and made a complete mockery of the judicial proceedings and had a good laugh at it all. I don't regret any of it. Some time I'll repeat my story here, it's wild and wacky stuff, and was big fun.)

Note: I added more to this update here: http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/9/96258/1643730/post.ashx#1643730 UPDATE:
She already talked to her Elder father this morning and he did what everyone else does. It looks like the angle is going to be:

    Secular chronology vs bible chronology.

My thoughts are that my strategy should be to change the course of the debate to "JW chronology vs. Bible Chronology". I need to show that secular chronology actually agrees with the bible and that the issue is JWs vs. the bible.

What way should I go on this?
She claims that the bible chronology can be traced from the Israelite Kingships all the way up to 607 BC. That Zedekiah's 9th year was 609 BC. That kind of stuff is where it gets confusing.

Can someone point me to some straightforward information on the Kings of Israel through history and where the Society tweaks it to make 607?
According to her dad, he claims the best explanation he ever read was in the Babylon Has Fallen book.

    Help!

    Thanks,

    -ithinkisee

I asked her if she remembered the picture of the Nabonidus Chronicle in the Daniel book. She said yes. I said, that is a pivotal piece of evidence that the Society uses as PROOF POSITIVE of 539. This same document also specifies Nebuchadnezzars 18th year of rule being in 586/87.

This is the key! The hypocracy of the WTb&ts is that they use the babylonian chronology (because there is no other way) to determine the "pivotal year" of 539! Then they dismiss that same chronology (of which 539 is a part of) when it comes to 607 vs 587! It`s like saying 2+2=4 on some occasions, on other it =5.

And about "reliable bible chronology": Yeah right. Ask her how many of the kings (5 in all) during this persion, whos lengths of reign is specifically line out in the Bible. The answer is none! Only two of the 5 kings are mentioned, Nebuchadnessar and Evil-Merodach, and the Bible is not specific on the length of their reigns. The other thre kings in this period, Nabonidus , Labashi-Marduk and Neriglissar aren`t even mentioned. So for the WTs claim to be true, these kings had to rule for 20 years longer than all of secular history says they did, and it still wouldn`t make sense, because that would (probably) disrupt the entire chronology that sets the year of 539.

I told her that there were many plights and droughts and natural disasters all happening at the same time before 1914. THere were some wars and crusades that killed millions of people ... all before 1914.

The point is that we live now, in the western world, and hence, these times seem "disastrous" to us. The apocalypse has already happened, many centuries ago. 1349-1352, in a matter of 4 years, 1/3 (!!) of Europe was massacred by the black death. People were sure that Armageddon was happening, right then and there (and who would blame them). That was a disaster. And people have been killed in the same scale as world war 1 in other parts of the world, in previous times. To the rulers of the ancient chinese dynasties, killing of a few million people was no big deal.
