Ever heard of anyone leaving the JW's and becoming, say, a Scientologist? Or a Morman? Or a member of any other crazy cultish org? I think that people who would do that might have a lot in common..

Rod P has posted on her that he has been both a Morman and a JW (not at the same time).

ya, i mean i pretty much see the entire religious system (abrahamic-based, eastern, and even do-it-yourself-just-add-water spirituality) as a cult. not by the strict definition of the word of course. but i see pretty much all religions as having started out as cults of sorts. as a result, YES, i have seen lot's of people leave the dub's for another cult. like someone said in a thread yesterday, (i forget who):

sounds like you've just traded jehovah for jesus.

that said, i would much rather see an ex-wit as a born-again or a baptist or a catholic, than see them go back to the org. of course, i would much rather see them as a hindu or a buddhist. but whatever, we're all out, right!?

and regarding atheism: i think that when you first leave a cult, so-called "weak" atheism, or agnosticism is a good neutral place to rest a recoup from. it's called the default position in philosophy, and simply implys a lack of belief in the supernatural. i think this is good for an ex-cult member, even if you do end up becoming "spiritual" again in the future. at least you didn't jump from the frying pan into the fire. for me, i will probably be an atheist until god(s) provide excellent evidence that they even exist. so far, no evidence has been forthcoming. and in the highly unlikely event that they do choose to show themselves, and they are not just some super quantum concious race from another star system, they will have to give me good reasons why they even deserve to be worshiped. so, i might be an atheist for the long haul.

    cheerio,

I know one man who left the JW's to become a Hare Krishna. Thank god he's finally free of both.

For the record though, there IS such thing as an athiestic cult. The Socialist Worker's Party members sell the Militant on the same corner that JW's push the Awake and Watchtower. Their primamry goal is to bring about a working class revolution by selling books from the Pathfinder Press to people and encourage them to attend extremely borning and pointless meetings (sound familiar?) Certain actions and activities are deemed "counter revolutionary" or a breach of their "Security Policy" will get you kicked out and shunned by the group. These actions include, but are not limited to, Beleiving in God, working a job that directly serves the "ruling class" (basically anything that has to do with military, law enforcement, finances, or politics), having extra marital sex, telling sexist jokes, or breaking the law for personal reasons, or opposing a union action (not quite JW strict, but you get the idea).

I almost joined this group until I realised that despite all of their wild ideas and crazy restrictions most of them didn't have the slightest clue about basic labor conditions. For instance, the youth leader didn't even know that the time-and-a-half overtime pay was a guaranteed by law, not a union condition.

Of course there's also Amway and other cult like Multilevel Marketing Schemes that can be done regardless of faith.

Actually, there are non-religious destructive cults.
