That paragraph originally appeared on page 29of a brochure entitled "Jehovahs Witnesses in the Twentieth Century" , my copy says"revised in 1979" - it was intended for Press and P R handouts at assemblies, although it was a regular literature item - it had a bright yellow cover with no picture on it.
The statement even bothered me at the time, because it was a blatent lie. After all, everybody knows that you have to be "In the truth" to get through Armageddon . It is the weasly worded euphemisms that get to me. "No, we do not believe we are the only ones who will be saved, because a lot of others may yet join us(paraphrase) . In other words, unless they join us, they dont get saved.
Typical doublespeak for the public, so as not to get too badly criticised.. You try having a "Bible Study" , then saying that you do not want to join the Org,, & see what they tell you about your future life prospects!
