  To Roy's point, the idea that the US can go anywhere in the world and transform a dictatorship into a democracy seems ill-concieved, especially now.

  I've held the notion that unless an oppressed populace is ready to fight and die for their freedoms all by themselves, they probably arent ready to handle those freedoms presented in any other manner. I'd put Iran way ahead of Iraq on the list of potential democracies. If oppressed people are ready to lead their own revolution against tyranny - I say help them out. This was clearly not the case in Iraq.

  The US had better learn the difference here, or many unfortunate situations will follow this one.

  great idea! lets turn iraq into another afghanistan! this is certainly gonna improve the security situation!

  You are one of the prime canidates who keeps claiming there was never a security problem to begin with and america went there for other reasons so why bring it up?

  Bush has made a total mess over Iraq. I agree on that. I just like arguing with socialists because they are animalistic in their hed instincts.

  shut the borders and F**k the rest of the world. Let everyone fend for themselves. If they want to trade we will do so if it is an attractive deal for us. We need to realize we don't need to babysit the rest of the world and most of the other countries are pretty impotent anyway.

  If the USA had not supported a POS like Israel we would not have any enemies. Cut them off with everyone else and the USA will do just fine.

  It ALMOST sounded like REALIST was supporting the idea of US troops remaining in Iraq. Just so ya'll know...Realist and I have done a bit of talking in PM, he's a nice guy who just happens to be wrong on politics is all...I've enjoyed the short chats.

  yeru i can just return the compliment! and i do believe you have the best intentions!

  and yes i think now that the shit hit the fan the US has to stay in iraq in order to prevent a civil war and total chaos. imo it would have been far better to get back to normal terms with hussein and to build that country up economically (imagine what one could have done with the >100 billion that were wasted on this war) but its a little too late for that now.

  your szenario is cute but has one or two major flaws...

  a) US politics is focused on getting the elite richer...oil industry, food production (american fruit et al.), weapons exports, etc. Isolating the US from any trade with other countries would severly piss off some of the most influencial people in the US --> its not gonna happen.

  b) the US is strongly dependant on foreign money as well as foreign workers (especially academics).

  by the way...i do view communism as a nice dream but i don't advocate it because it most likely cannot work. i believe that a controlled free market - as is present in some european countries - to be the best solution. preventing people from slipping into severe poverty not only saves these people a minimal life quality but also reduces crime, the formation of ghettos, racial tentions etc.

  That seems better than uncontrolled capitalism; however, from what I know, we don't really have that either, what with controls, subsidies, tax breaks, and, what do you call it?, when the government protects prices while the corporation launches (not a patent), but anyway, it's not really a free-for-all capitalism.

  You've said that about Simon too. You know, your . . . certainty in determining who's right and wrong reminds me of, sorry, JWs and other religionists. It would be so much more respectful if you just "agreed to disagree." Not that anyone asked me . . .

  yes you are right...there are minimal restrictions on the market even in the US. europe has however a better protection of the workers. the system as it was in germany was the best.
