This is an iteresting discussion. I would like to say one thing. I feel freedom of religion has been taken too far in the USA, b/c if a religion can do the harmful thigns like JWS and other cult like religions do, they are dangerous. I guess it is the old freedom of speech and porno argument. do u want poro to exist so all of us can say what we want? One problem with JWS is they are very dishonest while they are requiting people. They do not make it clear the REAL the outcome of DF/DA/SHUNNING(OFFICAL OR OTHERWISE). Oh they tell u, but someone needs to really tell us, u can lose your family, friends job and be an outcast. They are never clear about all that. I think if they were more clear about it, they would have less people join in the first place. Even my children knew at an early age that any religion that causes families to break up is BAD.

I thought this was great at first and now I'm swaying...

The part of the article I certainly do agree with is when it said,

"Prosecutors claimed Jehovah's Witnesses destroys families"

I can certainly attest to that. My personal experience is that it destroyed my relationship with my family of origin. It's something I can never get back. All those lost years since being disfellowshipped over 10 years ago. The loss of mothers, father, brothers, Uncles, Aunts, nephews and nieces...

I can never ever regain my relationship back while the J.W.'s still INFORCE their own laws on disfellowshiping... this shunning is horrible.

For those of us who have lost loved ones to the borg, like myself...We hurt and feel pain at our losses.

Maybe now I don't wish that the J.W.'s were banned, because they will have alot of other religions that will probably come on board to support them...and they (the J.W.'s will invite them to come on board)and still be condemning them at the same time. They will fiddle both sides if it is advantageous for them.

I just wish they could get them to throw out their "shunning" practices.. for it has and does destroy families.

Is that not why many of you are faders and leading a double life because you wish not to have the relationship with your believing family cut off and destroyed.

    sincerely

On this occasion I actually support the Russian decision.

Dansk, I totally support you on principle. However, movements tend to thrive on repression. So, I don't like it, because it'll just give them more steam, more "street cred". Not just in Moscow, but here. They can say "we're Gods true religion, because we are persecuted, just like the early x-tians" Bullshit, I know, but convincing to morons just the same.

Maybe the Russian authorities have been reading the reports in the American press of the law suits against the WTBTS.

Maybe the Russian authorities have been reading the personal accounts on JWD (and other sites) of the heartache and sorrow cause directly through involvement with the WTBTS.

Maybe the Russian authorities are brave enough to stand up and defend their people against such groups as the WTBTS.

If not maybe this will at least let people know what they are really risking if they listen to that sweet little old lady or smart dressed young man on their doorstep selling the WTBTS literature.

    For those who dont agree

would you allow Osama Bin Laden to proselytize in your area? If not, why not.

    GREAT post, Special K!!!

And I may as well jump into the pool and say that I agree with Dansk's thoughts. The mere FACT that the WTS presents itself as a religion, is what makes me sizzle, when they are what they ARE!

Then under this "religious" facade, they are able to wiggle around and make all kinds of claims AS A LEGITIMATE RELIGION which we ALL know they are NOT!

Personally, at this point, I really don't give a flip who gets to march where and for how long, but I DO care that as we speak, the JWs on other discussion boards and I imagine in "real life", are bemoaning the fact on how they are so persecuted as the TRUE religion, etc, and will drive THAT nail into the board for all the mileage it can get. They never mention the other religions that have been banned in recent times as well.

I admit that I DON'T know the real reason that Russia is imposing this ban, but venturing a wild guess on MY part, would be that the poeple are FED UP with the garbage of the WTS, their recruiting tactics and harmful outcomes to families...and someone saw fit to look into the practices of the WTS and didn't appreciate what they found---and another lawsuit followed (WTS appealed and won a previous lawsuit similar to this) so the courts were more than willing to go for it again---and they won again!

Then again, you know what they say about "opinions"...and that's mine! LOL!

Anglise, I was writing my post as you submitted yours, so I didn't see it until after I corrected spelling, etc! But YOU had the same feeling that I did, and elaborated more on some thoughts that I went off on another direction!

ANYONE who's familiar with the WTS is aware of the harm it does...and the Russians have access to just as much info as we all do...and as I said---wild guess---but this MAY be what spurred the latest lawsuit against the WTS!

    Nice post, Andlise!

    hugs,

    Annie
