    if this happened to you?

Sitting behind my computer a few mornings ago, I was doing the share of reading that I do on a daily basis, sipping my coffee, minding my own, when an instant message appeared on my screen. Call it second nature, I responded as I usually do. My friends have my screenname as well as those who i choose to chat online with.

Now, quick flash to a few weeks ago, I opted to change my address from AOL, because as anyone who is familiar with the service can to tell you, it sucks to have them, for numerous reasons.

Aside from constantly getting booted off line, the incessant spam, the porno addresses in the mail, the lousy chat rooms, and the fact that they keep track of where you go so as to sell the info to other buyers, I realized that there really was no point in paying $21.99 a month when I could get what I need for free from other providers and keep my privacy. Privacy being the focus here.

Now as to why i had AOL in the first place, I am relatively new to the web. I figured, why not? Its free access for 700 hours during the trial-month, worth checking out. Trial runs out, I learn my lesson, I choose to move on. So I did what i had to do, I changed my service gave my address to my friends and all was well until the other morning.

At first i thought nothing of it, I was not being harassed nor threatend. Or so I thought at the time. Afterwards though, I realized that I had never given this person my new address nor had I given them my old address either, at least not directly. We had never chatted privately. Not in a chat room, nor instant message nor had we exchanged mail. We do not even have friends in common.

Aside from each others posting on a thread similar to this one, that is about as much contact as this person and I have shared. As I look back I never changed my address on the boards that i post. So if you click on that icon on the left by my name you will not reach me, that address has not been working for quite a while. . .

So here i am wondering WHY someone would invest the time to search me out. Could there have been an agenda behind the "call"? What else about me are they looking up?
These questions followed me for a day or two so i decided to post and see what this board would say
How would you feel and would you question it? And how would you react if your privacy was invaded this way?

    thanks in advance
    Chuck

    Sorry Chuck,

I can't help myself. You're just so cute!

Seriously though, were they harassing you? Did they say things that made you wonder if they were looney tunes? If so, I would question this person's motives. If not, they probably just thought you were a person with some interesting ideas and wanted to get to know you a little better.

I've never had this happen to me. The only instant messages I get besides my friends is porn offers.

Hmmmmm... ever see Fatal Attraction? I hope you don't have a rabbit.

    Dark Clouds,
The same thing happened to me the other day. I was a bit taken back, because I had never heard of his person before. But I thought, I could have prevented this by using all of the privacy features that AOL has. I have added my friends and blocked the rest. No big deal.

I wouldn't get all paranoid about it though. Actually the person that contacted me had no way of knowing my AOL screen name, because I use a hotmail account. But we all know on AOL your screen name is your also your mailing adress.

I am with Riz....any other weird signs of stalking?

AOL has all of the security features of a jelly bean.

Did you compromise your identity? You mentioned trial period; AOL hackers are famous for sending you IMs telling you they are management, and you must verify your password immediately or your membership will be cancelled. Did you ever do that?

How about your user profile....make it generic.

Everyone here should be reminded to change their passwords every three or four months.

    Sorry chucky boy.

hey darkclouds - maybe you're privacy is being invaded by some badd gurrrllll who thinks u is cute?

also i'm confused - i thought u said u changed from aol to a free service and was harrassed via the free service? Other people here have reported hate mail etc. And i know a few of the guys here suspect Bethel plants masquerading on this site/board as well.

there are also do gooder jw's trying to give the apostates a hard time by invading their privacy in this manner (easy way to count time i guess).

Hey all and thanks for your time:

OK i don't want to jump the gun and start calling anyone a stalker. . .yet. After all, as i mentioned it was not a hostile conversation in any way, nor did i feel threatend, but i felt my privacy WAS.

In answer to your questions LDH---
first of all thanks for your pointers---those would both be, no. I have never compromised my identity to a 'fake' email or anything like that, i'm fairly careful that way.
Though i am new , im not a novice and my brother is very on with computers, he knows them inside out and has been nagging me to get plugged in for a while so, all warnings and security checks were explained before i plugged in.

    Mommy:
i empathize with your scare but i guess that is what happens when you are an AOL subscriber without having your privacy features set. As i commented before i am NOT with AOL that is the reason for my concern.

    Riz:
yeah i'm with you on questioning motive and that is the reason i ask why. Its like it would take some reasonable amount of time to do a search and seek someone out, and it would be unlikely that this would happen for no good reason.
    ps. no i don't have a bunny

    Goo:
who knows? on-line anyone can be whoever and whatever they choose to be, illusion is too simple through this medium.
And yes, my provider is now free so you got the gist of the situation. I was being harassed through my NEW provider.
No hate mail yet, but you never know I'll keep things posted. As far as i know it wouldn't surprise me that indeed there were plants in here. I mean with a name like Jehovahs Witness.Com
(sorry simon) it would seem like a good place for a mole to burrow. . .

    hi goo,

in answer to your question, as I was typing that sentence I was thinking that same thing. I thought to myself, 'I get messages from my friends and I get porn offers. Additionaly, I get porn offers from my friends. Hmmmmm...'

However, to secure the illusion of being a delicate flower, I decided against letting everyone know that I am a true deviant at heart and so is the company that I keep.
