    @OP

    Lets put it this way. You have the freedom of right to say what you just said in your first post and subsequent posts. It's called free speech, or freedom of expression. If one of us disagrees with you, do we have the right to kill your entire blood line? Or just you?

    This magazine has the free right to publish what it will. It should be able to do so and only have to worry about any legal consequences for mistakes - they should never have to worry someone who disagrees with them will shoot them. Anymore than you should for this thread.

    Also, you posted that no other religion has committed the atrocities of Islam. While that might be true for our modern time, they have never done anything as bad as the church. Not even 9/11 is as bad as the least terrible atrocity of the Catholic Church. I'm not trying to provoke Catholics here, I know the church would never do the things it's done in the past today. Merely pointing out that the comment by the OP is not correct. Also this is not in defense of Islam, personally my belief is that all religion on the earth is just a man or group of men power mongering.

    Have to agree that the history of religion is a history of oppression and violence.

    Islam is highlighted today because psychopaths are terrorising us.   But may I suggest that Islam is also highlighted today since the politicians and media thrust it upon us.  They add fire the the flames and divide rather than unite.  The top 4 news stories on UK national news two nights ago were reports and images of warfare.  The first news item at midnight on Christmas morning was war.  Then it was how much we'd all spent down the shops.  This is what our politicians turn us as a species into, heartless consumers with guns.  They revel in it. There are far more events on earth each day than just wars and money.  There are good deed done every day in every society but all we hear is war.  And this helps us fear each other.

    And all this while far more of us commit suicide each year than terrorism in our own countries kills.  Why can the media not address this, for example?  Psychopaths commit murder, not the good-hearted majority.. Terrorists scare us with bombs and reports of bombs because the media helps in the scaremongering.

    All groups in history have committed murder, it is true.  There are lots of humans across all societies that have done this.  There are even more who have not, so humanity still stands with some honourable ideas and works.

    But homeless people lie on our streets amongst us yet we don't parade down the streets or gather in our millions demanding they are assisted.  Our old people sit cold and alone, so what does that say about us?  Don't countless things need to be fixed before freedom of speech truly is an issue? Obviously, we are also a kind species so many do help.  But their works seem to get blasted away every time our warmongering politicians arouse us to war, for whatever reason.  Even the state aid we send is useless when this is done or when hijacked and stolen.

    I therefore suggest that politicians don't care about freedom of speech but their freedom to drop bombs as an instrument of national policy.  And if they can arouse the peoples into more and more division and fear do they not achieve their aims?

    We cannot trust politicians - they will let us down.  We cannot trust the religious interpretations of us humans - they will let us down.  We cannot trust ourselves - we are humans and we let ourselves down with hatred and intolerance and greed, this isn't a rant, it's an observation - a cold hard look..

    All the while we live thus freedom of speech is a pointless illusion - it doesn't seem to have solved anything thus far.  We may have 1 man 1 vote and the delusion of freedom.  We've have convinced ourselves that we are free and that freedom of speech is an absolute necessity for our dignity and autonomy.  But we are not and nor is it.  Democracy has been hijacked by the rich and freedom of hatred is offered by the politicians.  This seems like freedom at the end of a gun.

    Your last post there really boils down to rights doesn't it? On all counts.

    The right of the media to cover what they will.

    The right of our elderly to live warm, appreciated dignified lives.

    The right of the homeless to have a home! We should be addressing why these poor people ended up in such a situation and making sure it doesn't happen anymore. Right?

    However... Without the right to free speech these issues cannot be addressed. This right isn't even just about saying what you want, but also inherent is the right and expectation for your expression to be respectfully heard. I ask you this:

    If we, as a world wide society, can't even deal with something as silly as a satirical cartoon of a man who died somewhere near 1500 years ago; if we, as a worldwide society, can't respect a person or groups right to draw such a silly frivolous thing - then how can we expect to be mature enough as a people to be ready to handle issues that actually matter?
