It seems a bit of a cheek. Whatever happened to Pastor Russells " we will never solicit funds " maxim.

The WTBTS of Britain is hardly short of cash- they've just spent 1 million GBP on a house in Wales to apparently house translators of the Societies literature into Welsh ( surely something that could have been done out of an office in Bethel or even a JW's own home. )

The current Society accounts look pretty healthy , boosted by all the cash that they've got from the individual congregations.

And of course , not withstanding the huge windfall profit the Society will make on selling the prime properties in the North of London. London real estate is up nearly 25% in the last year.

If I was still in , I'd frankly tell them to use their own money. Stick a big round ZERO on the form. What guys like Steven Hardy don't realise is that times are hard for the average working person who doesn't live in a rent free apartment getting everything done for them.

Weren't they asking for money a few weeks ago?

Something about the loans from the borg being 'cancelled' but the sheeples have to pledge to keep paying the same amount forever more to the WBTS to use the Kingdum Hall paid with donations & built with free labour?

Surely ever the most uber dubbie is gonna start squealing.

When they asked from the platform to pledge money - we all had a blank sheet just to put the amount on: no name or fform to fill in: at that stage I was so scared not to put anything on that blank page: so put an amount: but did not pay it: felt so guilty: if only (well not really) I felt like I do today: I would have put R50 000 a month (rands in South Africa) haha would have been so funny!

respectful_observer - you might also want to put down the 41 branches closed in the last 3 years. Surely that's gotta save some cash, no?

They just changed their contribution arrangement. The JWs have now committed themselves to their pledge and these funds go into the Branch who then decides what large projects will be completed. Now it seems they are asking for even more money and ignoring the pledged money which was supposed to be pooled for projects such as this.

Listener, it's just like the US government.

Ask for tax money for ( an emotionally appealling need) education, get it, spend it on other things, whine about needing more money for education, wash-rinse-repeat.

Finance - Watchtower Revenues Near $1 Billion Dollars

The Watchtower made it into New York’s top 40 corporations in 2001 with revenues touching $1 Billion dollars per annum. When you add this to the real estate they own, the Bethels and the Kingdom Halls, it probably makes them one of the richest printing companies in the world. Also see Donations.

Newsday.com, article on the top-40 New York corporations in 2001.

    ..

No doubt WT's revenues are even higher now.

A Meeting Marked by Unity and Thrilling Plans

... Guy Pierce of the Governing Body spoke next and acknowledged that all present were curious about our construction projects in New York State. He introduced a video showing developments at Wallkill, Patterson, and recently acquired sites in Warwick and Tuxedo, New York. At Wallkill, a new residence due to be completed in 2014 will provide over 300 additional rooms.

There are plans to develop a 248-acre (100 ha) property at Warwick. "Although we are not yet certain of Jehovah’s will regarding Warwick," said Brother Pierce, "we are proceeding to develop the site with the intention of relocating the world headquarters of Jehovah’s Witnesses there." Plans are also being made to use a 50-acre (20 ha) parcel of land situated six miles (10 km) north of Warwick to facilitate the staging of machinery and building material. "Once construction is permitted, we hope to complete the entire project within four years," said Brother Pierce. "Then our property in Brooklyn can be sold."

"Has the Governing Body changed its mind about the closeness of the great tribulation?" asked Brother Pierce. "Not at all," he answered. "If the great tribulation interrupts our plans, that will be wonderful, absolutely wonderful!"

    .

Jehovah isn't sure what he's doing with all this real estate development, but go ahead and donate anyway...

Has anyone ever put in a slip demanding back their previous donations?
