    FHN and AndDontCallmeShirley: watch the first 4:40 of the video i posted on the previous page. 7% is referring to ELITE scientists, not all scientists. Also it's not the exact percent that matters so much as it is the concept of whose arguing with who. NDT says it best.

    Sunny, it's important to note that the scientists that Elaine Howard Decklund conducted her research and poll with, are considered to be elite.

    @Sunny23...

    I watched the video. Thank you.

    The claim was made by certain person(s) here that 7% of elite scientists are believers (confirmed in your video). My point made in response was, that means 93% are not believers/atheists, which took the wind out of whatever argument the believer was making.

    Early in the thread certain individuals took issue with the idea that atheists, overall, are more educated and intelligent than religious people. Athesis were called immoral and, in so many words, stupid for being atheists and for putting sincere questions to the believers. DJS, myself and others posted information substantiating that fact (that atheists are more educated/intelligent), and, again, it took the wind out of the sails of the baseless claims of the believers.

    Rather than acknowledge the information presented, the believers interpreted it as we are know-it-all people who denigrate theists and think we are superior. We said nothing of the sort. We merely proved by reference that the biased, uninformed opinions of the believers were wrong. Facing facts appears to be very traumatic for these individuals, so they reverted to their familiar stronghold: ad hominen attacks, strawman arguments and childish silliness.

    If you're an atheist, I ask you, does your atheism hinge on believing most scientists are atheists? I'm hoping you have more reasons than that for your conclusion. From what I've found, doing research, the numbers go from 27 % belief in some kind of deity, to around 50 %.

    In my view, atheism isn't a problem. The only time I have any issue with atheists is when they try to pressure others to be atheists. We all walk a different journey. We have to make our own minds up. Living peacefully together, working together, is paramount. I have more problems with dangerous things done in the name of religion, than I do with atheism. When either atheists or religionists step on each others' backs, it's a problem. I'd rather see unethical or dangerous things addressed individually, than to see blanket condemnation of either religion or science. I'd also like to see the myths about both discovered and understood accurately.

    What a ridiculous question.

    Are you a believer because most believers believe?

    ADCMS: i was joking with my educated friends being J.Ws...

    But you have rested your case.

    Do you mean that?

    Now let me raise my point, because i havn't rested my case and i do have a point. I mean i think i do? Now what was my point before i rest my case? I think i am on acid and have realised all matter is only energy and that all thoughts ate equal and one...pornography is good and all drugs should be legal.

    I now rest my case.

    What a ridiculous question.

    The question is rhetorical, but to clarify this for you: we know you base your conclusion on more than the statistics of what scientists believe or don't believe, so why the hysteria over the statistics? Edited to add, maybe "spazzing out" is more accurate then the word hysteria.

    Interesting, I've known a lot of atheists including my best friend and have never been pressured to be atheist.
