The important thing it seems to me Terry, for salvation, is faith in Jesus Christ and the bible seems to have played a large part in the fact that many many people have faith in Jesus Christ 2000 years after his death and resurrection and amidst an increasing secular modern world.

    mP:

Quantity does not improve the validity or honesty of any belief. Over a billion people believe in Allah and Mohammad. Given there are roughly twice as many christians compared to muslims does that make them half right or are they both true ?

Most Christians and Muslims in past history couldnt even read and even less had access to a BIble. Youw ould be surprised what they actually believe. You might not realise but the reason for stained glass windows was to tell people the stories in the bible. Given how basic and short these window murals were that shows just how ignorant people were. The poor were far too busy being hungry and hoping not to get killed by the king or chuch than to worry about Jesus.

Religion has not helped anybody in history. Less religion makes for a far better society. When Europe had religion everybody was a slave of the church and king. Its not a coincidence that the countries that became great are the ones that left the church and became secular. The longer they stayed with the church the less glory they gained. Its interesting that England which was one of the first to leave the RCC also became the greatest and gave us our modern society and civilisation. Italy and Spain who remained Catholic were left behind.

mP. i think it's more to do with the Holy Spirit direction than what a person wants to do

    mP:

In other words everyone can make anything up. YOur answer tells that you are inventing belief that is not even written in the text. Its hard to believe that the wonderful creator behind the universe coul dbe such a poor writer, that so much has to be assumed, and invented by xians.

THE BIBLE is the basis for christianity.

    mP:

Actually its not. Much of xian belief is not even remotely found in the bible. Christmas, the Lords day (Sunday), Easter, even his true name are not present in the Bible. We dont even know the actual names of the apostles or when he was born. Different gospels cant even agree on the names of the apostles. We dont know who wrote the gospels so past catholic doctors just made up a fancy story and assigned them to Mat, Mk, Lk and Jn.

disrepectful of anothers beliefs and therefore rude.

How is it rude to be critiucal of stupid ideas? Would you be critical if I started a movement, based on scrolls that were handed down to me by a pixie called trixiebell. would you continue to refrain from criticism if my beliefs resulted in wars and persecution of people who failed to live up to the idea in those scrolls?

Religious ideas need to be criticised and derided for what they are, divisive, contemptible and corrupted.

    “Terry”:

It’s interesting that there can be so much conflicting garbage added to the Watchtower (the Bible, Part II in JW land) over the last 134 years, considering that it’s all supposed to be based on the Bible (the real one).

The Bible itself does strike me as being rather fanciful and to a large extent allegorical, but even at that, consider this: when you compare the Watchtower publications, with all their mish-mash of changes, flip-flops, and controversies developing over such a comparatively short period of time (just over a century) – when you compare that to the Bible, which was supposedly written by some 40 men over 1500 years or so, then it sure is striking that so many inconsistencies and dogma reversals have come about at such a high rate (like rapid fire), squeezed into such a comparatively short time frame, and from a so-called Governing Body who is supposedly the sole mouthpiece for Almighty God in the whole world, especially after they apparently got the grade A quality inspection “passed” sticker from Jesus in 1919. (If a batch of ground beef was of that quality, I don’t think it would exactly be getting any quality inspection stamp; it would probably be ordered to be incinerated, because it would have maggots, e coli bacteria, and a good dose of botulism.)

There’s not too much that matches the Watchtower Governing Body in producing so much garbage in so little time. Well, at least the paper magazines and books and plastic DVDs can physically be recycled – so in that case, it’s “garbage in, new materials out.”

Thats simply not true. The Bible is full of amazing contradictions. The gospels cant even agree which day Jesus died , who were his apostles. The OT also has many crazy problems. Take Gen 1 & 2 it has different creation accounts with creation occuring in different orders. The OT is riddled with monolarity on a grand scale, eg Nahushatan, the copper snake, which is worshipped like a God until it became pagan in Josiahs time.

I detect a tendency to non-confront the topic.

Christian denominations do not avoid the bible. Most prop up their belief system with a cocktail of scriptures and some central leader's ideas such as Joseph Smith, Ellen White, Mary Baker Eddy, C.T.Russell, etc.

The most in-you-face christians are evangelical. They bloody well rub your nose in the bible. They make outrageous claims for inerrancy.

The pussyfooter christians usually flap lie bedazzled moths toward the central flame of a TV evangelist who has a crafty line of blah blah to peddle.

If you look at the number of bibles sold and the variety of translations available you get the message pretty quickly.

WE HAVE TO CONFRONT an understanding of what the bible ACTUALLY is without rose-colored glasses.

Too much time is wasted, imho, on debating interpretations of teachings instead of wiping all of it out in one fell swoop by targeting belief in the accurate transmission of Truth in the bible.

There is no rational, logical or evidential basis for trusting the bible as a coherent book communicating the mind of god to mankind.

your story of the salad and cockroach is interesting.

from my viewpoint as a christian it sounds like your comparing a ruined salad with going against the Holy spirit.

I came to hear about Christ through the bible that led to my baptism and hopefully recieving the Holy spirit. like the ethiopian eunuch reading Isa 53.

maybe that is why it is irritating to me and not to you.
