I suppose this 'garbage in garbage out' irritates me. If as i think Terry is talking about the bible it sounds rude. It sounds as if he's saying people like my relative are stupid. It sounds rude in the sense that to many in this world life isn't that good and there is no hope.
Now that you've raised your objection (and it has merit, no doubt about that) I'll address the issue of "rudeness".
I'm going to tell you a true story that might serve as an illustration.
Around 1970 I was newly married and my wife and I were invited over to the house of another JW couple. These were not the tidy sort, but, they
were good company.
Other JW couples were there also.
The "sisters" went off into the kitchen to prepare the meal while the "brothers" gathered in the living room to chat.
About 10 minutes later I notice my wife poking her head out of the kitchen. She was trying to get my attention.
I walked over and she whispered something confidentially.
"A large cockroach crawled into the salad bowl. Sister Sullivan and I are the only ones who saw it. She managed to snatch it out and get rid of it. But, she doesn't want to say anything. What should I do?"
I looked at her like she was crazy. "What do you mean, what should you do? You don't expect everybody to eat that do you?"
Now it was her turn to look at me like I was crazy!
She said, "Once we mention the cockroach in the food nobody is going to want to eat ANY of it and the meal will be ruined. It is not Sister Sullivan's fault."
And that is my true story!
I won't tell you what happened next because it is beside the point.
I hear your objection and you sound like you are saying what my wife and Sister Sullivan were saying.
Should we avoid hurting innocent people's pleasant feelings and ruining a nice time by pointing out that an otherwise convivial get together
is obviously NOT what everybody THINKS it is?
