I remember a brother in a TMS talk quoted from the Bible the part where"bowls" were being emptied......he

pronounced it as "bowels".........nobody said anything or corrected him. I thought this was funny.......

I still remember that from the 1950's as a teenager.

Should you say HILL-a-copter, or HELL-a-copter?

I guess it depends on where you intend to fly it...

I have a lisp so certain words give me pause like statistics.

"I knew an elder than pronounced January as Janjuary..."

My mother does that and I did too until a high school friend pointed it out.

Here is something I noticed one night while watching Twilight Zone.

It was an episode about Custer's Last Stand and the 7th Cavalry.

A couple of the actors kept saying CAL-vary instead of CAV-alry.

After that I kept catching people who made the same mistake.

What I've discovered is this. People who have spent time in church alot as kids hear the words "Jesus died on Calvary" an awful lot.

It is the first pronunciation that comes to their mind.

People who did NOT go to church say it correctly: Cavalry.

There are pronunciations I learned from the dictionary when I was a teenager which have now CHANGED!

The word "formidable" use to be pronounced FORM-i-dable (accent on first syllable.)

Now the second syllable is considered correct for-MID-able. Go figure!

The word dour is often pronounced as though it rhymes with the bitter taste: sour. However, it is supposed to rhyme with door.

Oxymoron use to be correctly pronunced OXY-muh-ron. But, a Danny De Vito movie contained a joke about somebody dumb as an ox who was also a moron. After that, everybody

pronounced it OX-y-MO-ron. And, the correctness changed!

When I was younger I wrongly pronounced the word awry AWE-ree instead of Uh-RYE.

The first time I encountered the following tongue-twister I could not even read it correctly by going slowly. But, I practiced and now it is no problem.

The Silent Sea ceaseth and thus sufficeth us.

    I wonder why, I can,t roll my "R's". A co-worker from Vietnam

ask me, "where are you from". I told him I was born here in the

states, he said you sound funny, I thought you were from Jamaica,LOL.

No, I was born in the south.
