The Internet was a very bad development for the Watchtower. The last thing in the world they want is for people to communicate. They want their dubs plugged into the Borg and nothing else. Since the Internet is a prelude to activated DNA and functional pineal glands making us all clairvoyant, they dread the day that more and more people will be able to go "online" without a computer. The real truth would then spread like gangrene, and they're outta business.

For some reason when I read "Others have decided not to have access to the Internet," I immediately thought of, "Reports are heard of brothers selling their homes and properties."
It is the same sort of manipulation. The Borg can't be honest about their intentions and make such a thing a command, so they simply trust that their compliance programming will work in the members. Reading in the Watchtower that some of "the friends" have done something basically tells them that to be Watchtower-worthy they have to do the same thing.
It's quite disgusting. Should be criminal.

Who wants to shop on line and have your groceries delivered when you are ill at home when the local Eldubs can arrange it and take all the credit?

You don't have to make people live in a commune when they're mentally in one. Or a prison is more like it.
Seriously, in several European countries all homes by law will have to be wired for the internet in the next decade, and in the Netherlands, homes are 99% covered.
Why? Because all information will be through the internet at some point. It is cheaper and more effective to have all information through one medium, TV, telephone and internet.
But, any high control group hates access to media by their members because they have access to unfiltered information. Back when the telephone became commonplace, the Society was warning members about it the same way they're warning about the internet, until they found it would be useful for their own purposes. Same with the radio. Television was beyond their means, so they villainized that, and now the internet.
They can't control content on the internet, of course, but who can, really? And that will have it's drawbacks, but it's also a good thing in so many ways.
I know some people who are not Witnesses who choose not to have television but its because they rarely watch it, and they can watch what they want of TV on disc or internet, not because they're media-phobes.
