It;s sad to see people get ripped off. But then, some people are so stupid, or misled, they almost deserve it, and all of the other lies, as well.

Here's another "experience" to add to the collection, told to me by a reliable source close to the situation:

KH had four congos meeting in it, three English, one Spanish. The hall, which was 20 years old with no mortgage, was in need of repairs. The three English congos passed resolutions to raise just under $50,000 for a major remodel. The Spanish congo pleaded poverty and said they could not participate (although, of course, they'd also benefit from the improvements). The two congos raised most of the money over the next several months and commenced some of the work. They finished a partial remodel, still had over $30,000 in cash with about that amount of work left to do.

By then the Spanish Congo, which had been growing rapidly, got a visit from its CO. He insisted they split. The other two congo's did not want to share the KH with a 5th group and suggested it was time to build another hall. Spanish CO nixed the idea, saying the impoverished congo couldn't afford it.

Someone stepped up and donated land for a new KH for the English congos. Resolutions were passed by the congos that wanted to move and a loan was obtained. The WTS stepped in and told them to build two halls on the lot, since it was so large. Apparently a nearby Spanish KH was on the verge of condemnation by the city due to faulty construction (one of the early volunteer builds before the RBC came on the scene). The Society wanted that congo to move into one of the new halls; this would solve their problem with the city and also cover future growth and expansion.

Construction began. It was assumed that the $30,000 remodeling fund would travel to the new hall with the congos that had raised the cash. The Spanish CO pitched a fit, saying his congregation(s) needed the money for additional remodeling. The WTS was consulted and suggested the English congo give their money to the Spanish congo in order to "keep peace." Many in the English congos, especially those who had donated $500 or $1,000, were irritated at the decision.

When the twin halls were completed, the Spanish congo from the defunct KH moved into one of them, sharing with one of the Engish groups. The other two English congos moved into the second hall. The congo remaining at the the old hall split.

So now you had two new halls, each with two congos, all sharing a huge mortgage. And the original Spanish congo, which was now two, was in the old hall, fully paid for, with $30,000 in the bank.

To this day, there are dubs there who are so pissed they can't talk about it.

And, of course, in the intervening 10 years there has been zero growth in the six congos. The Spanish groups leveled off, then shrunk slightly. The English congos had to be "rearranged" last year because while all of them had declining attendance, one was down to only 45 pubs.
