I don't know if this helps of not, but I completely understand Warlock's frustration.
I was with two friends once on a hiking trip. It was dusk and we were sitting around a small campfire. We heard a loud hissing noise overhead and looked up to see an object of some sort streak overhead. It was very bright and trailing what looked like flame.
All three of us worked our way up the hill we were camped against. When we got to the top about 15 minutes later, we could see a small dot about halfway up the larger hill beyond. It wasn't nearly as bright, but still a cherry red. If we had had any sense, one of us would have stayed right there and directed the other two, but instead, like three excited little boys, we all hurried to see what it was. Problem was, these were rocky hills dotted with jumping cholla and it took us awhile to get there. We never did find it.
It was probably a meteorite, which is fairly unusual to actually see. What's frustrating is that without tangible proof of any kind, most people don't believe the story. "Yeah, right Tom. Were you guys drinking by any chance?" was the standard reply from friends and coworkers and the gut reaction was to be upset. Nobody appreciates having their personal experience minimized.
If we had actually recovered a glob of metal, we would have gotten our names in print. As it turned out, we were just three hikers with a wild story. It's a bitter pill, but people have a right to ask for proof.
