There is a great deal of evidence suggesting that cannabis is beneficial for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. It shows particular promise in the case of Alzheimer’s disease, andClint Werner covers the topic in detail in his book Marijuana Gateway to Health.

With that said, a group of Australian researchers, led by Dr. Tim Karl, published a study in this month’s edition of Psychopharmacology that offers further insight. It suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) can help reverse some of the cognitive effects associated with Alzheimer’s.

Australian Researchers Investigate CBD, Alzheimer’s In Mice

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of Dementia and places a major burden on those closest to the patient; it can take a toll on the caregiver financially, psychologically, and socially.

Despite the disease’s prevalence, there is little understanding about its cause and progression; research suggests it’s related to plaques in the brain, inflammation, and oxidation, among other factors. Often, the most noticeable symptom and of Alzheimer’s disease is a decline in cognitive abilities, including an inability to recognize familiar faces.

“It basically brings the performance of the animals back to the level of healthy animals.” – Dr. Tim Karl

Using genetically engineered mice to serve as models of Alzheimer’s disease, the Australian research team investigated how chronic cannabidiol (CBD) treatment would affect their cognitive abilities.

Of the mice included in the study, half received daily injections with 20 mg/kg of CBD for three weeks. Researchers measured their ability to perform a number of cognitive tasks, including social recognition, and compared the results with the group that did not receive treatment.........

There is a great deal of evidence suggesting that cannabis could be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s. In fact, a Brazilian study published last year suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) could help ward off neuronal cell death in the face of neurodegradation.

In order to provide more insight on the topic of medical marijuana and neurodegenerative disease, a team of researchers from Tel-Aviv University in Israel published a study in the Journal of Neuroscience Research last month. Their results suggest that ultra-low doses of cannabinoids, andtetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in particular, can help protect against cognitive deficits that arise as a result of inflammation in the brain......

Our profs suggested that we have marijuana decriminalized rather than legalized it. In high school, I saw trademarks and logos by tobacco cos. of what legal marijuana cigarettes would look like in a store. My criminal prof. said that in NYC no one enforces the marijuana laws. Manhattan judges would be indulging while both the district attorney and defense lawyers were inhaling. The jury room was thick with marijuana smoke. It was never publicized on the front page of the New York Times but it was reality. If the product is legal, it will be taxed and the price will go sky high.

The disparities in sentences for crack and cocaine raise fundamental civil rights issues. I can't believe it is still illegal.

On the other hand, I don't see productive people who constantly smoke marijuana. Perhaps one of the states where it is now legal at a state level while remaining a prosecutable federal crime will serve as a lab to convince other states to join the group.
