    keyser,

The only other alternative is do what someone else says and die. What's the difference?

I'll tell you. There is choice with God.

No, it isn't. You start from the presupposition that human rights arise top-down, but they can as well originate bottom-up.

    Example?

How can any of us sit in judgment of God?
    His justice is never perverted

I don't think people are sitting in judgment of god so much as those who portray him in a way that makes his justice seem perverted. If God is just, than what's written about him in the Old Testament is a gross misrepresentation of who he really is.

You mean following human laws? You do that whether you believe in god or not. And you die whether you believe in god or not. Not quite sure what your point is.

    That's equating a vehicle with a source.

    keyser,

You put it well yourself. I just gave you the other side of the same coin. Let me spell it out.

God: Do what I say or die (and face punishment)

Any other source: Do what I say and die (and face punishment)

Can you see now which paradigmn preserves choice.?

Apparently you don't believe humans can take control of their lives?

    hamilcarr,

How does self-control relate to the source of human rights?

Back to the topic: I hope we can agree, leaving aside our religious inclinations for a moment, that the account quoted in the OP intuitively strikes us as unjust and therefore repellent. One needs extensive theological reasoning to overcome this basic intuition.
