Actually, the WTS has brought out that the WTS did not completely understand what 1914 meant until 1925. They tend to speak out of both sides of their mouth.

I remember when I read this in a 1993 WT and had seen the Proclaimers book which said they had believed the presence of Christ began in 1874. The following are those quotes and the ones about full understanding of 1914 not being until 1925.

*** w93 1/15 p. 5 ‘Caught Away to Meet the Lord’—How? ***TheWatchtower has consistently presented evidence to honesthearted students of Bible prophecy that Jesus’ presence in heavenly Kingdom power began in 1914.

*** jv chap. 28 p. 632 Testing and Sifting From Within ***Based on the premise that events of the first century might find parallels in related events later, they also concluded that if Jesus’ baptism and anointing in the autumn of 29 C.E. paralleled the beginning of an invisible presence in 1874, then his riding into Jerusalem as King in the spring of 33 C.E. would point to the spring of 1878 as the time when he would assume his power as heavenly King.

    *** w97 6/1 p. 16 A Secret Christians Dare Not Keep! ***

1925 C.E.:TheWatchTower explains that the Kingdom was born in 1914; the "sacred secret" about the Kingdom must be publicized.—Revelation 12:1-5, 10, 17

*** w89 3/15 p. 15 par. 17 Look to Jehovah for Insight ***By means of "the faithful and discreet slave," Jehovah also helped his servants to realize, decades in advance, that the year 1914 would mark the end of the Gentile Times. (Luke 21:24, KingJamesVersion) As they entered the era following World War I, there were, of course, questions that perplexed them. But what they did know was sufficient for them to act wisely. They knew from the Scriptures that God’s due time was at hand for the old system to be destroyed; so it would be foolish to put their hope in it or to let its materialistic standards of success govern their lives. They also knew that Jehovah’s Kingdom is the real solution to all the problems afflicting humankind. (Daniel 2:44; Matthew 6:33) They saw clearly that it is the responsibility of all true Christians to advertise Jehovah’s anointed King, Jesus Christ, and His Kingdom. (Isaiah 61:1, 2; Matthew 24:14) In 1925, by means of the WatchTower article "Birth of the Nation," they were fortified with a clearer understanding of Revelation chapter 12; so now they understood what had been taking place in the heavens, invisible to human eyes. Such insight gave sound direction to their lives.

*** w86 5/15 p. 14 par. 17 "The Things Revealed Belong to Us" ***In 1925 God’s earthly servants became possessors of an accurate understanding of Revelation chapter 12 and discerned exactly what had happened in the marked year of 1914

*** w85 7/1 p. 20 pars. 8-9 Jehovah’s Goodness in "the Final Part of the Days" ***However, Hosea also foretold that these spiritual sons would "come back and certainly look for . . . David their king." Fleshly Israel has had no king since the overthrow of the Davidic dynasty in 607 B.C.E. That began 2,520 years of godless rule—"the appointed times of the nations," or Gentile Times. (Luke 21:24; Daniel 4:16) But in 1914, as "the final part of the days" began, God installed the One whom David typified—Jesus Christ—as King in Zion, the "heavenly Jerusalem."—Hebrews 12:22; Psalm 2:6.

Jehovah’s people on earth did not immediately understand all of this. However, their search for ‘David our king’ was climaxed when TheWatchTower of March 1, 1925, published the article "Birth of the Nation." This set forth conclusive proof, based on Revelation chapter 12, that Jehovah’s Messianic Kingdom had been born in the heavens in 1914 and that Christ is now ‘ruling in the midst of his enemies.’—Psalm 110:1, 2, KingJamesVersion; 2:1-6.

*** w84 2/1 p. 23 par. 9 ‘Oneness of Spirit’ in a Rapidly Growing Flock ***In modern times, Jehovah has continued to provide needed help for his servants, doing so through "the faithful and discreet slave," the remnant on earth today, of which Jesus is the appointed head, and this help comes at just the right time. (Matthew 24:45-47) Thus in 1925 the "slave" class, by means of TheWatchTower, helped its readers to appreciate that God’s Kingdom had been in operation in the heavens since 1914 and that, in reality, there are just two organizations—Jehovah’s and Satan’s.

*** w81 5/1 pp. 26-27 par. 17 The Visible Part of God’s Organization ***Back, however, to the meaningful year of 1925. The long misunderstood vision of Revelation 12:1-17 was cleared up. The March 1, 1925, issue of the WatchTower magazinecleared away the idea that the birth of the man-child by the "woman" in heaven pictured the birth of the papacy from an apostate religious system during the fourth century. Rather, the bringing forth of the man-child portrayed the birth of God’s Messianic kingdom from his "woman," his wifelike heavenly organization. This took place in the heavens at the end of the Gentile Times, "the appointed times of the nations," in the autumn of 1914 C.E. The earthly part of Jehovah’s spiritual organization was thrilled at this revelation!

*** w55 6/1 p. 335 Part 11—Restoration of Theocratic Organization ***Nevertheless, 1925 turned out to be a marked year in that a flood of new spiritual truths came to Jehovah’s people. It was in this year that TheWatchTower brought them the sublime revelations that the name of Jehovah must have its proper place; that the birth of the man-child Kingdom organization occurred in 1914; that Satan had been cast out of heaven and now must confine his operations to the earth; that Jehovah purposes to make a great and lasting name for himself at the battle of Armageddon; that such battle is not a fight between capital and labor, conservatives and radicals, or by any human parties and nations, but is God’s fight against the entire Devil’s organization, invisible and visible; and finally, that Jehovah’s servant class on earth have no part in that fight, but must only warn of its coming.

*** w51 7/15 p. 435 par. 11 The 1,290 and 1,335 Days of Daniel’s Prophecy ***Furthermore, in 1925, for the first time, it was seen and understood that the Kingdom was actually born in 1914, that it was a fact. No longer was it a matter of proclaiming the time had come for the Kingdom, that the day was here for Satan’s world to end, but the Kingdom had come and was ruling from heaven, and already a war in heaven had been fought. TheWatchtower for March 1, 1925, published this information

*** jv chap. 10 pp. 138-139 Growing in Accurate Knowledge of the Truth ***However, at that time the Bible Students felt that the setting up of the Kingdom, its fullestablishment in heaven, would not take place until the final members of Christ’s bride were glorified. A real milestone was reached, therefore, in 1925, when TheWatchTower of March 1 featured the article "Birth of the Nation." It presented an eye-opening study of Revelation chapter 12. The article set forth evidence that the Messianic Kingdom had been born—established—in 1914, that Christ had then begun to rule on his heavenly throne, and that thereafter Satan had been hurled from heaven down to the vicinity of the earth.

I'm reminded of these two disparate views of the accuracy of the predictions re: 1914:

    September 1, 1985 WT, p. 23:

From 1876 onward, Jehovah’s people served notice upon the world, and particularly upon Christendom, that the Gentile Times would end in the fall of 1914. (Luke 21:24, KingJamesVersion) The clergy could not ignore this preliminary work of almost 40 years—a work corresponding to that of John the Baptizer. Those clergymen waited eagerly to pounce upon this journal’s editor should 1914 pass without any outstanding events to correspond with those about which he warned. But, oh, how they were silenced when on July 28, 1914, peace was shattered by the outbreak of World War I!

Light, Book One, p. 194 (published in 1930):

The Watch Tower , and its companion publications of the Society, for forty years emphasized the fact that 1914 would witness the establishment of God's kingdom and the complete glorification of the church. During that period of forty years God's people on earth were carrying on a witness work, which work was foreshadowed by Elijah and John the Baptist. All of the Lord's people looked forward to 1914 with joyful expectation. When that time came and passed there was much disappointment, chagrin and mourning, and the Lord's people were greatly in reproach. They were ridiculed by the clergy and their allies in particular, and pointed to with scorn, because they had said so much about 1914, and what would come to pass, and their 'prophecies' had not been fulfilled.

Quote from Light can be found here:

Rutherford said they had been ridiculed because their prophecies for 1914 "had not been fulfilled." Later Watchtower publications have tended to say the exact opposite.

    Blondie,

My comment to Slim and Slims detailed follow-up, both quoted the Society as stating in 1929 that Jesus returned in his 2nd presence in 1874. The Kingdom was a separate and parallel development from Jesus 2nd Presence. By the early 1930s, these two were merged together. Though your quotes about 1925 are correct with respect to the Kingdom ... they are from later Watchtower claims. But the actual material from the 1920-1930 time frame, the Bible Students still believe that Jesus returned in 1874.

Blondie none of those quotes cite any evidence that the Society's understanding about Jesus' "presence" changed in 1925. The Birth of a Nation article in 1925 related to Jesus taking kingdom power in 1914. It did not change the belief that his presence had begun in 1874, nor do those earlier articles than the new study article quoted in the opening post make that specific claim.

It seems the writer of the recent WT article was sloppy in his research. He assumed that because the Proclaimers book and other recent WTs say the view of 1914 was refined in 1925 that must have meant they "realised" it was the start of Jesus' presence then. But no contemporary evidence has anywhere been cited to show they believed Jesus' presence began in 1914 in 1925. Instead Jonsson has produced evidence to show they clung onto the idea Jesus' presence started in 1874 into the 1930s.

In the 1940 edition of the Harp of God (pages 235 and 236--I have an original copy) the Society was still using the "old" chronology. It mentions 606 BCE, 1799 as the "time of the end", and 1874 as the start of Christ's second presence.

So, where on earth do they arrive at 1925?

The Watchtower can fool some of the people some of the time, but it can't fool all of the people all of the time!

"...Since 1925, Jehovah's Witnesses have recognized that World War I and the events that followed amount to sure evidence that Christ's presence in heavenly Kingdom power began in 1914..."

Yep....I was stunned when I read that yesterday and was going to do a post about it if no one else did. Is this the first time they've said something like this? Because if I were still a believing Witness, my question would be: "Well then how exactly were they able to 'discern' in 1914 that Jesus had begun ruling? After all, they've been claiming that for years:

w66 12/15 p.757 par. 21 Have You Said:"Here I Am! Send Me"? "Specifically in the January 1, 1916, issue of The WatchTower and Herald of Christ's Presence, pages 5, 6, under the heading "Militarism and Navalism-How Long?" this remnant of childlike disciples of the Greater Isaiah, Jesus Christ, declared their neutrality. They recognized themselves to be the spiritual underpriests of Jesus Christ, Jehovah's heavenly High Priest, as declared in 1 Peter 2:5-9. They recognized that the Gentile Times of the worldly nations had run out in 1914 and that God's Messianic kingdom had come into power in the heavens. So they needed to stick to their spiritual priestly duties to God.........Thirty-four years before 1914, the magazine Zion's Watch Tower and Herald of Christ's Presence, in its issues of December 1879 and March 1880, was pointing to 1914 as a marked date in Bible prophecy.

g94 11/8 p.10 The Real Significance of 1914: "..Yet, as far back as December 1879-some 35 years before 1914-TheWatchtower (then known as Zion's WatchTower and Herald of Christ's Presence) gave Bible evidence proving that 1914 would be a significant year."

ce chap.18 pp.227-229 par.32 The Bible-Is It Really Inspired by God? "...Decades before that date, there was an organization of people who were making known the significance of 1914. The New York World of August 30, 1914, explains: "The terrific war outbreak in Europe has fulfilled an extraordinary prophecy. For a quarter of a century past, through preachers and through press, the ‘International Bible Students' [Jehovah's Witnesses] . . . have been proclaiming to the world that the Day of Wrath prophesied in the Bible would dawn in 1914. ‘Look out for 1914!' has been the cry of the . . . evangelists.."

w81 2/15 p.10 Insight on the News: "...Hence, another respected authority adds his voice to those of numerous statesmen and historians who, in looking back, recognized the significance of the year 1914. Yet, decades before that year arrived, dedicated students of Bible prophecy were able to identify 1914 as a climactic turning point. (The "Bible Examiner," October 1876, pp. 27, 28) These Bible prophecies also reveal that the "generation" that saw the events beginning in 1914 would also see the "conclusion of the system of things..."

I'd say this is yet another attempt at their trying to distance themselves from the increasingly embarassing 'Jesus returned in 1914' crap without actually saying so. I wonder how many Witnesses will pick up on this uh, 'new light'.

~ Feb 1, 1925 Watc Tower ""Robes of Righteousness"

’The Lord returned prior to 1914. In 1914 he received his kingdom and began his reign. In 1918 he came to his temple; that is to say, began the special reckoning with the temple class.

~ March 1, 1925 Watch Tower ""Birth of a Nation""

It seems to be well settled now in the minds of the anointed that the Gentile Times, which began 606 B.C., ended in 1914; that the devil became the god of the entire world when Israel was east off, and that with the coming of 1914 the devil’s privilege of ruling the world without interference ceased. The physical facts are consistent with these conclusions.

In Revelation 11: 17, 18 we read that the Lord has taken his power and reigned: "And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come." This prophecy began to have its 9ulfilment with the World War in 1914.

    ~ May 1, 1925 Watch Tower ""For Elect's Sake"

The world ended in 1914 and was marked~ by there beginning the World War. The nations ware angry. That was the beginning of sorrows upon the earth, and not the end of sorrows. (Matthew 24: 3-8; Revelation 11: 18) So essentially Christ ""returned"" in 1874 (prior to 1914) but recieved his kingdom reign in 1914.......

There is GOBS mor of this "spirit" led booze driven madness too...... (I can only read so much of that years Watch Tower... I will let yall find more 'gems')
