Scully,
An excellent topic that I know is of concern to you.
This sort of deception is so easy for people to undertake online.
Online a spotty teenager can become Don Juan, a janitor can become a CEO of a giant corporation, and the talentless can become the worlds most gifted.
Most JW's have led unspectacular lives and many of us learned how to live double lives without conscience. It then becomes very easy to manipulate the gullible who come to a Board such as this. To some degree or the other, if you have been here for a while, you can see it being played out daily. Though you mention a few outrageous examples, there are also many at the periphery of Munchausens posting here.
I recall a few years ago a poster mentioning that he played onstage with a famous guitarist, who happens to be a friend. I contacted the poster and he was happy to supply details, both of his own "name" and the venue. He was unaware that I knew this player. I was speaking with this player about unconnected things and asked if he knew this person. Of course he did not, and neither had he ever played at the named venue. I do not think malevolence was the motive for this posters fantasy, just a desire to be what they perceived as a "bigger" person.
My advice is to be very, very slow to make online friends. Do not be ashamed to do some checking on the person. Contact those who seem to be closer to the person than yourself before you open your heart or your life to them. Try at your earliest convenience to meet them.
I have met a few persons who post on JWD and frankly have found them to be very sweet, honest and genuine people. I have also learned to trust some whom I have never met, but I will always remain guarded about the matter before I relax my boundaries.
