Well Kim won, but what a horrible end to a great match.

It was two away from matchpoint and Serena was serving and a linesperson called a foot fault. It was a bad call. They reracked the tape and showed that there was no foot fault. But because of the foot fault, it was now officially matchpoint. Serena was incensed and went over to the linesperson and shouted out obscenities and threatened to shove the tennis ball down her throat. Then Serena went back to serve but the linesperson went to the chair umpire and told her that Serena threatened her and then the tournament umpire went out and declared that Serena received a point penalty for abusing the linesperson and since it was already matchpoint, it was point-set-match for Kim Clijsters.

It was really sad to see. The linesperson made a bad call and it isn't a call that could be challenged, but because of Serena's behavior the match ended on a technicality rather than on a matchpoint earned by Kim's strong gameplay tonight. It was a very well done match by Kim and certainly not one that I would have predicted. Serena however was not at her usual top form, as showed by her poor serve in the second set which Kim took advantage of in order to break twice.

At least Serena's mood is good now at the press conference.

As I was flipping through the channels, Is this the match that I just saw the end of and Serena bashed her racquet on the ground and bent it up?

Yeah. But later on she went on shout obscenities (which had to be bleeped out in rebroadcast) at the linesperson and then she threatened her. Kind of the behavior that McEnroe used to get away with, but now there are penalities for that and it just so happened that the bad call put Serena at matchpoint and her penalty made her lose the match. At least Serena accepted the defeat gracefully and promptly shook hands with Kim, but it was still an ugly end to what had been a very exciting match.

Yep, that was the one. She was penalized a point for smashing her racket. The foot fault may have been a bad call, but there was no excuse for the profanity and threats to the lines lady. Serena did not apologize for ruining the match at the press conference.

Kim was playing great, like she had never left tennis. She really deserved to win and I think she would have won anyway.

Serena forgot to thank Jehovah like she usually does at the end.

    Go Kim!

Bizarre ending to Williams' title defense at Open

By HOWARD FENDRICH (AP) – 12 minutes ago

NEW YORK — Serena Williams' U.S. Open title defense ended in bizarre, ugly fashion Saturday night, when she was penalized a point on match point after yelling and shaking her racket in the direction of an official who called a foot fault.

Williams lost to unseeded, unranked Kim Clijsters 6-4, 7-5 in a taut semifinal that featured plenty of powerful groundstrokes by both women. No one will remember a single shot that was struck, though, because of the unusual, dramatic way it finished.

With Williams serving at 5-6, 15-30 in the second set, she faulted on her first serve. On the second serve, a line judge called a foot fault, making it a double-fault — a call rarely, if ever, seen at that stage of any match, let alone the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament.

That made the score 15-40, putting Clijsters one point from victory.

Instead of stepping to the baseline to serve again, Williams went over and shouted and cursed at the line judge, pointing at her and shaking a ball at her.

"If I could, I would take this [censored] ball and shove it down your [censored] throat and kill you," Williams said.

The line judge went over to the chair umpire, and tournament referee Brian Earley joined in the conversation. Williams then went over and said to the line judge: "I didn't say I would kill you. Are you serious? Are you serious? I didn't say that."

Williams already had been give a code violation warning when she broke her racket after losing the first set. So the chair umpire now awarded a penalty point to Clijsters, ending the match.

"She was called for a foot fault, and a point later, she said something to a line umpire, and it was reported to the chair, and that resulted in a point penalty," Earley explained. "And it just happened that point penalty was match point. It was a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct."

When the ruling was announced, Williams walked around the net to the other end of the court to shake hands with a stunned Clijsters, who did not appear to understand what had happened.

"I used to have a real temper, and I've gotten a lot better," Williams said in her postmatch news conference. "So I know you don't believe me, but I used to be worse. Yes, yes, indeed."

Lost in the theatrics was Clijsters' significant accomplishment: In only her third tournament back after 2 1/2 years in retirement, the 26-year-old Belgian became the first mother to reach a Grand Slam final since Evonne Goolagong Cawley won Wimbledon 1980.

Clijsters hadn't competed at the U.S. Open since winning the 2005 championship. Now she will play for her second career major title Sunday against No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark, who beat Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 6-3, 6-3 in the other rain-delayed women's semifinal.

Just saw this on Sports Center. Will the tape be used in a Judicial Comittee?

I watched the tape again and I think there was a lot more because she berated the linesperson for a while and there were more bleeps than just two.

    Kim just tweeted:

    quote:
Played probably the best match of my career tonight and it was the craziest too!

The fairy tale goes on - some how, I'm in the US Open final on Sunday beating both Venus and Serena along the way... am i dreaming???
