rather be in hades: "i take it the family is all out and free?"
Yes. I awakened in March of 2007. Wife and kids were all mentally out by October 2009. Kids never got baptized and we've all faded. Carefully working on some extended family who appear to be VERY liberal JWs.

" damn this cult. it's so awful what it has done to families."
And that's the problem, right there: who is "THEY"?
As the old saying goes 'they' is 'US': anyone who participates inside the group, or who only goes through the motions, is THEY.
People say, "well I'm not an elder, a MS, etc". Really?
There's a legal concept known as 'conspiracy' crimes (eg "conspiracy to commit X"). If you are involved in a criminal conspiracy, YOU are responsible for the actions of the entire group, EVEN IF you did not personally pull the trigger, but only say, invited the victim to the location they were killed, or drove the trigger man from the scene (as in c to c murder). You didn't hack the computer but only engaged in planning (c to c access to unauthorized systems, eg Anon). In the eyes of the law, engaging in conspiracy means you ARE considered the trigger man, the hacker: you aided and abetted the cause, and are treated as if you DID personally pull the trigger.... In by an inch, so you might as well be in by a mile.
Same goes with participation in a cult: although not illegal, morally you are engaging in a spiritual pyramid scheme, a Holy ponzi scam, a fraud.

So are you saying that a faded JW who attends the memorial and maybe one or two meetings per year is just as culpable as a currently-serving Elder who is actively promoting the religion?
BTW, if you'd really like to discuss the morality of:
1. Staying fully in the JWs for a time as a double agent vs.
2. Fading with little to no active participation vs.
3. Going out in a blaze of DF/DA glory
Maybe we could do it here,
or perhaps start a new "Stay in/Fade/DA" thread.
