Man guilty of trying to lure boys for sex

October 23, 2006 Goshen — A 50-year-old Jehovah's Witness has been found guilty of trying to lure underage boys in Middletown to have anal sex with him and pose for nude photographs.

Jesus Cano was detained by Middletown police on June 24. Cano had been handing out a small packet of papers that included a written note, several pictures of his naked buttocks and a name, phone number and e-mail address.

When the aunt of one of the boys called police, Det. Tom Miller posed as the boy, called the number on the card, and set up a meeting with Cano for later that night. When he arrived at the agreed meeting place, police took Cano in and later arrested him.

Cano was indicted on two felony counts and seven misdemeanor counts, two of which were dismissed by Judge Jeffrey Berry ahead of trial.

During the two-day, non-jury trial, Cano's lawyer John Ingrassia tried to show that there was insufficient evidence to prove Cano planned to go through with his intent to have sex of take naked photographs of a minor.

But Berry ruled today that there was sufficient evidence to find Cano guilty on five of the seven counts against him, including the two felonies.

He will be sentenced on Nov. 27. Assistant District Attorney Melissa Ferraro said she will be asking for the maximum of 2 2/3 to 7 years in prison.

Cano is a Mexican national with a valid visa to reside in the U.S. That visa will be revoked now that he's been convicted of a felony, and he will be deported after he serves his sentence. Have comments or questions on this story? Tell us!

Man guilty of trying to seduce teen boys

October 24, 2006 Goshen — Jesus Cano intended to have sex with a boy. And he intended to take naked pictures of the boy.

Yesterday, Orange County Judge Jeffrey Berry convicted Cano of two felonies and three misdemeanors for committing those crimes.

Cano, 50, is a Mexican-born member of the Jehovah's Witnesses who was caught on June 24 trying to lure teenage boys in Middletown.

He handed out a small packet of papers with his phone number, a note declaring his intent and with photographs of his own buttocks in various poses.

The note offered his victim to "try something different and brake the routine" while the photo caption read: "I'm ready to stand like this for you."

When a boy named Matty called him, Cano arranged to meet him, late at night, in a park. Cano showed up with a jar of petroleum jelly, condoms and a camera in his car, as well as cold beers.

If it wasn't for the fact that "Matty" was actually Middletown police Detective Tom Miller — and not the 15-year-old that Cano had come on to — a boy would have been molested, prosecutor Melissa Ferraro told the court yesterday.

"He wanted these young boys in Middletown to contact him to have anal sex with him," Ferraro said. "When he thought one of those boys took his bait, he wanted to meet with him."
Cano's lawyer John Ingrassia argued during the trial that there was not enough evidence to show Cano intended to have sex with a boy or take illicit pictures of him.

But Berry wasn't buying it.

"When an individual solicits a young person," Berry said, —¦ and that person then goes to meet the young person at a relatively secluded place and has a jar of Vaseline, condoms and a camera "¦ that person is ready to commit that crime."

Law enforcement should not need to subject children to a predator in order to catch the person in the act, he added.

Berry found Cano guilty of attempted use of a child (under 17) in a sexual performance for attempting anal sex; felony promoting a sexual performance by a child for intending to take pictures; and three misdemeanors: attempted criminal sexual act and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Cano will be sentenced Nov. 27. Ferraro is asking for the maximum of 2ª to seven years in prison. Cano will lose his U.S. visa and be deported after he serves his sentence.
