If they've not contacteed you, in all that time, then it's a gamble. You're gambling some of your personal history and the feel-good factor that you had from some fond memories, against a couple of possible outcomes. Either they will respond positively, and you will retain a friendship, albeit modified as you've both changed. Alternatively the memory of the friendship will turn to dust, as they reject you.
