I'm unsure about how I feel about this issue. It's very complex. There is no simple solution. And I have a lot of bias and prejudice that I have to guard against. I try not to stereotype them, but it is hard when the politicians and the media does it.
On one hand, I am against being charged with a felony for helping someone who is an illegal alien. As I understand it, doctors, nurses, teachers, and even the average person who stops to help a lady with a flat tire could probably be charged under the proposed law.
I also was watching a case on the news the other day where parents were picked up and deported to Mexico, leaving their kids (who are US citizens) behind. I just don't think it's right to separate parents and children. I've seen enough of that going on in the JWs.
The National Anthem in Spanish? Well, I feel that is free speech. At official functions, it still remains the English version that will be honored.
10-13 million undocumented aliens! That's a lot. Why did the feds let this number get so high? Deporting that many people is a monumental undertaking now. That many people in our society suddenly displaced will create some real problems for them and us. Surely there can be some sort of amnesty granted for otherwise law-abiding people who have been here for many years, along with reinforcing our borders to make sure that no more make it in illegally.
On the other hand, I do think they should make an effort to learn the language, blend in, and assimilate into the greater American culture. They don't have to lose their culture in doing so, just like other American immigrants adopt American customs but still retain their culture.
Yes, they need to be paying taxes too. Many have FICA and other withholdings taken from their paychecks. They never file income tax returns to get their tax refunds because it would be discovered they are using a friend's or cousin's Social Security number. Some are paid under the table, however, and no taxes are ever paid in these cases.
So I sure don't know what the answer is, but in 1863 we outlawed slavery in this country. Unfortunately, we now have a whole segment of our society without rights, who are basically in economic and political slavery.
Should that be a felony?
I don't know. It is a difficult situation we have let ourselves get into.
