My daughter's boyfriend got a deer just before Christmas, and he gave us some pepperettes he had made from it. I didn't try it, as I don't care for pepperettes, but they said it was good....My father and brothers have always hunted, deer, moose, ducks, partridge, you name it, they've hunted it, (here in Canada)....I like moose steaks, they're really nice on the barbie. |
Anyone here have access to deer meat or sausage?

Elsewhere,
Whole Foods markets sells frozen venison. They have it ground up, and in chunks. You might call around to see if the ones closest to you carry it. I think HEB Central Market also sells it.

I've never been hunting before, so I think I would enjoy the adventure... however due to my lack of experience I would likely be more of a burden than a buddy. ; You have to remember, I'm a "city slicker computer geek".
I could take you but you have to do 3 things:
- Find a firearm , .30 cal or larger or a shotgun with slugs. Learn to shoot it well enough to his a paper plate 10 times at 75 yards
- Learn to sit still in the woods
- Do what I ask you to do... and help me dress and drag the deer outta' the woods
Part of the gamey taste is the deers diet. The other thing is bloodshot meat... the bullet can disrupt a lot of meat with a poorly placed shot. If the deer is not shot cleanly it will run and adreniline will taint the flavor also. That adreniline is the taste (acutally lack of taste) that folks notice in home grown and processed beef. The flavor is all about how the animal is killed...quick and quiet is the key.
Texas is flush with deer. I understand hogs are year round hunting there too.

New hunters are always welcome and never a burden. The experienced hunter takes the shot then the newby (that would be you) cleans and drags the deer back to the truck. When back at camp you can skin the deer out and hang it in a cool place. As you are doing this the more experienced hunter (that would be me) takes care of the administrative tasks that go with hunting..

Regarding firearms, I have a 9mm Glock 19 and a pump shot gun. One of these days I will need to buy a good rifle... maybe a P-90.
I've never been hunting, but I do know how to shoot thanks to shooting ranges.
