ya, i took it up as well. sometimes it's gross, but mostly i enjoy it. i smoke Camels. i like them in social situations, and when i am writing.

not too concerned about the health risks right now. everyone dies. it's so hard to pin. my grandfather smoked from when he was 9 years old until he was 87, and didn't know he had lung cancer until 2 weeks before he died. he spent the last two weeks of his life on morphine. not a bad deal if you ask me. at least he enjoyed his life. and then i have seen other healthnuts die from a heart attack at 52, or prostate cancer or something like that. so ya, smoking kills. but then again, so does just being born. that's my hypothesis anyways. truth is, i don't really care that much. it'sa good time for now, so i do it. whatever.

I took it up for a limited period when I separated from my wife. It was intentional self-medication. When the carton/supply ran out I stopped. It helped me over that hump.

I occasionally smoke a pipe, but it's perhaps once every couple of weeks or so as a wee treat, the same way I treat drink. I've enjoyed it more over the holidays, but probably wont pick it up again for another months, who knows...

I'm not an addictive personality, but I don't intend putting that to the full test

I never smoked a cigarette in my life because of the health reasons but primarily because I dislike the idea of becoming dependant on chemical substances in order to get highs or feel relaxed. It also saved an aweful lot of money over the years.

I started cigarettes after I left the Borg as spliffs made me cough my guts out and I needed to get used to smoke.

I got up to 20-a-day, but it was smoking on reflex, not real enjoyment (unlike spliff), and within three years or so I'd more-or-less quit cigarettes and maybe had a handful of hand-rolled cigarettes in additon to spliffage a day.

In the past few years I now mostly smoke spliff (a few a night), which is herbal canabis rolled with tobacco. I do have the occasional cigarette or handroll, but it's either when I am out drinking or if I use the smoking room at work for a conversation with a coleauge, in which case I'll accept one.

I now have my craving sorted to the extent that I can go away for three weeks (or a weekend etc.) and not smoke anything, so I guess I could quit totally, but I don't want to.

Now, what makes you ask a stupid insinuating question like that..!?

Seriously now, giving up my cigars was about the hardest thing I did when I came back in 13 years ago. They always were a great way to settle into a meditative writing and studying mode. And do so again I might add...
I think that for many exjdubs, taking up some kind of smoking is a great ACT of resistance - a statement of independence.
(BTW, tetrapod, IMHO health freaks die young because they eat too much bread/carbohydrates/soy-protein instead of animal protein and lots of healthy fats.)

    Very interesting comments.

I doubt I will ever let tobacco be a major part of my life - the idea of cigarettes is not appealing. But a pipe is for some reason. But I doubt I would have a habit there, but no one ever knows.

And Atypical I will keep that in mind. I would like to be there now instead of this God forsaken place in winter.

I started smoking, and I know this is going to sound like such a tall tail but its not, I don't get addicted to it, sometimes I smoke non stop for months, then I leave it for a few months (without any cravings).

I hadn't smoked since finding out I was pregnant and my little girl is 5 months old now, but the other night I had one cigarete and it gave me an instant headache so I might leave it now.

Never tempted to start and not because of the WTS directive. In this area, 3/4 of the people are non-smokers and not because they are JWs.

It was one of the many things I got dfed for - I started with smoking joints when I was 16 and rapidly moved on to cigarettes. I have been a non smoker for about 2 years if you add up all the months I was being reinstated and when I quit for myself a couple of years back. I really wish I didnt smoke - I dont smoke daily - just when socialising or having a drink. If I didnt smoke I know I would drink a lot less on a regular basis.

I haven's smoked since new years eve - last night was tough but I battled it out. I find if I eat a meal then the urge to smoke or drink goes away. I think I just have a hard time interpreting hunger correctly.

I really want to crack it - its a vile practice and I always hate seeing other people smoking in public or worse getting wafts of smoke from them.

I`ve smoked for 12 years now. And now I should quit, because I have a bit of asthma (probably smoking-induced). Don`t start smoking, it`s the dumbest thing you can ever do, because it`s so hard to quit (I`ve tried many times, can`t f-ing do it). My dumb older brother started smoking after he got DFed at age 27 (!!). What an idiot. Well, I gtg have a puff now...
