Just spoke with the mayor of our town about a notice in this mornings paper, re the jws are applying to build a hall in our community,,,,,,,,, would anyone care to comment on what they would say at this meeting? I mentioned to him that it is a cult and I do not want it in our town. He admitted he didnt know much about the jws and their beliefs and I told him about the abuse and actions being handled by the elders and not the police and also the non government views. As a best friend of a now ex-jw (who waited patiently for 20+ years for her to leave the group!,) I don't feel I can put together a letter of opposition properly to bring to the town meeting....... any takers ?

Take a look at the Silentlambs brochure you can print off yourself. The opening line usually gets peoples attention. Get busy handing them out, see what kind of response you get. Know anybody on the school board, PTA, involvement with children at all? Rally support.

I don't know in what country you are in but in liberal countries like the US there is little that can be done to stop them on religious grounds.

But it's worth a try to at least inform the local population about who the JWs really are and what their dark side is, child abuse, dictatorial style of rule, systematic lying to and manipulation of their members, blood transfusion ban, subjecting their people to intense psychological pressure, numerous anti biblical (heretical, apostate) teachings.

Your opinion (which is subjective) would not be sufficient grounds for preventing the building. The planning authorities in democratic countries do not take a theological view when permitting or blocking religious building projects , otherwise not a single church , mosque or synagogue would ever be built , as someone would object on religious grounds. On what planning grounds (eg access problems , amenity) do you wish to oppose the building project?

When we were going to meetings, our cong. tried to build a new hall on some land that a JW family wanted to donate. A town meeting was held to get permission for it.

They failed. No tax money would go into county coffers from that land. Instead they sold it to a developer and it now has about 20 houses..........lots of tax money.

Actually, most people don't care except for some issues that come up with any religions group that builds near a residential area...

    1. Cars coming and going every Sunday morning (and afternoon if 2 congregations sharing the building)

    2. Cars coming and going every Thursday evening (and possibly Tuesdays too)

3 to 4 hours of 40 to 50 cars coming and going every week

    3. Children playing and running around outside

(Actually people should not call on the people in the neighborhood any more than they do now)

I wouldn't want a KH in my backyard, but then I wouldn't want any religious building that has a high traffic going on 2 to 3 times a wekk.

(Whether they build in your area or not, JWs will be calling on your neighborhood)

You could always mention how much traffic there will be because of all the meeting throughout the week. JW say "five" meetings (although we know it's really kinda THREE) which sounds like a LOT of coming and going, so use that... If its building is being proposed in a residential or clost to residential area, I'd doubt the people who live there would like that much traffic....

Mulan has another good point, taxes.

Also, the pedophile angle is not likely to work unless you know of a convicted pedophile that goes to that congregation...and pedophiles are not just JWs or at the KHs...the greater number are everywhere else and people should be on guard; 60% are relatives and close friends.

Consider the traffic, taxes, and noise issues.

I was a builder all my work life make sure their planned occupancy numbers is legit, and their sewer output is not exceeded by double sessions (two congs using) or by 'tacking on' an apartment. Also,if a known pedophile attends some towns have a one mile ban around schools.

Remember, unlike other churches JW's have no charity to compensate for no tax status. They have no soup kitchens, food pantry or let self help groups like AA use the building for meetings.
