    Hello Community,

My name is Brett W., and I am senior undergraduate student at the University of Florida. I am seeking your help as I am conducting a research study for my senior honors thesis.

The purpose of my research is to identify the political personality of Jehovah's Witnesses. (they are only erroneously labeled "apolitical" and "neutral")

Since I know most who visit this site are defected members, I reach out to you for a particular facet of my study. I wish to compare and contrast the political opinions of current v. defected members for an important portion of my study.

I have fabricated an original political opinion survey aimed at active and defected Jehovah's Witnesses. Please take 10 min and help me out in my research!

    Please go here:

I hope to get my project published!

If you have any questions you can reach me at my official university email: [email protected]

I wanted to write about the Witness' stand in First Amendment cases but having been raised a Witness and then fled, it triggered too many emotions in me. In fact, I was a poli. sci major and graduated law school so I would certainly be willing to help. Can you provide a working link?

If the questions are too personal, I won't answer and will check your credentials.

May I ask what your thesis is or would that degrade the results?

You sound like an excellent and interesting candidate to take my survey. Please do!

My thesis is that the Jehovah's Witness ideology equates to being an extreme, uncompromising social conservative and fiscal moderates due to their unquestioning reliance of and trust in WT dictates and Bible literalism.

    PS.

I am not sure how to encode a hyperlink in this forum. But if you copy/paste this -------> https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/defectedmembers_honorsthesis

    It should work!

    Also, sir

I am conducting personal interviews to use in my final thesis. Would you like to participate in this as well? The more educated the person the better!

Frankly, don't you want a bolder line to write an entire thesis? The results suggested are common sense. I wrote my thesis at Columbia on the insantiy defense, which is interesting b/c there are three or four different tests for insanity. Fortunately, without my knowing in advance, the ACLU had a pilot project in DC which tracked cases under the most liberal definition in the country. Contrary to expectations, a more liberal stance caused greater harm to defendants. Psychiatrists are not juries but were evaluating accused defendants more sternly than regular civil patients. I'd sex it up somehow. Maybe you are doing data analysis.

I saw something on Meet the Press shortly before Tim Russert died. He had marketing experts on discussing how common, routine household purchases reflected a life style, which, in turn, showed party affiliation more accurately than ideology. There are sharp splits between Dems and GOPS on purchases of colas (Dems are Coke, GOPs are Pepsi), toothpaste, etc. toilet paper, soups, etc. I thought this was crazy. Using this information, isolated Dems in very GOP areas can be targetted for political ed and getting out the vote efforts. I am unabashed progressive. As they went down a roll call of products,my preferences were almost always Democratic. Russert was middle of the road. It impressed me and shook me.

Also, I am curious as to how balance respondents. People here are anti-Witness enough to post on an online forum. Will JWs answer it, too? I doubt it. The people are not typical Witnesses. Social conservatives, yes but non voting. I was raised in a urban setting, so most JWs I know who would hint at political affiliation were progressives. I am also curious whether you will contrast the JW group with fascism or Naziism in personality type. The emphasis on order is striking. I laughed at a recent NYT article on the Pope's visit to Germany. Millions showed up but they only had one arrest. NonGerman reporters marvelled at the neat parking and no pushing for a good spot.

    I will participate.

An online survey is anything but valid. I wouldn't accept its use by one of my students, especially for inclusion on an "honors" thesis. The results will be skewed toward the view of dirty, filty, apostates (us) and away from current believers. If you were submitting this for my review, I'd be asking you all sorts of questions about validity and procedure. You'd probably be fairly unhappy within the first minute.

If I were writing this I'd follow this outline:

    1. State my thesis: "Jehovah's Witnesses claim political neutrality, but they have distinctive political view. American Witnesses tend to be politically conservative and socially liberal. Their political beliefs manifest themselves outside the usual political channels, showing themselves in social ways rather than through political activisim.

    2. Analysis of Russellite era political statements - An examination of Russell’s writing in three areas: 1. Christian’s relationship to the state; 2. Christian’s view of international conflicts; 3. Christian’s social responsibilities

    3. Same for Rutherford era. Examine anti-Fascist and anti-Nazi statements and expressions of American Nativism found in Rutherford era writings. Rutherford’s view of European colonialism. Rutherford’s “neutrality” doctrine.

    4. Knorr-Franz era. As above. Examination of anti-Communist, anti-Socialist and anti-Colonialist statements.

    5. The Governing Body era. As above. Also refusal to identify “King of the North.” This is an era full of socio-political statements couched in Biblical terms.

    6. Rank and file views are mixed. Members tend to continue to hold to the political views entertained before entering active group participation. Their new world-view subverts active political expression. That warnings are frequently given to the membership to be “neutral” shows that many are not.

    7. Examples and incidents where political neutrality doctrine fails. (Africa and Taiwan provide interesting examples. You will find more by searching google news archives).

    8. Balance with false accusations of political activism. Restate your thesis and summarize proof.

Have you discussed this with your professors? No professor in his right mind (many are not in their right minds.) would accept a web survey. I wouldn’t. Rethink this.

    @Old Goat,

    1. I appreciate your evaluation and detailed assistance and guidance. Being educated in the field of JW's, I hope I can reach out to you for further help? Please email me: [email protected]

    2. I am a third year undergraduate, writing my senior honors thesis in the area of Political Science; not Masters.

    3. My survey data for "active" JWs and "defected" JWs are separated. Obviously this is the only way to do a comparative analysis.

    4. My data for "Active" JWs is sought from local congregations in Florida, Illinois, and Georgia. These locations are specifically chosen due to ease of access.

    5. As with any research being done on humans, my prompt was preapproved by the Institutional Review Board.

I am a meek student, and I wish to entertain all criticisms and suggestions. Research is never perfect, but I hope to submit the best senior thesis I can.

    @Band

But "obvious" to whom? Not many are educated on JWs. Very interesting what you said, though! I will take any suggestions for improvement under advisement!

    I completed your survey.

Although I am Canadian, I would be willing to volunteer for an invterview if needed (and if it is not too time consuming, since I am in school currently myself.

Yeah the sampling bias is the first thing I thought of. The self-response nature of the poll renders it unscientific. Plus....isn't there a demographic survey attached to it so that you would have some idea of how you are sampling the population? You also need to have some controls on who responds to the survey, otherwise you might have people submitting more than once or goofing off with fake responses.

    @ Leolaia

Yes, there is a demographic survey attached. Controls are also set so that only 1 survey may be taken per IP address. As far as "fake" responses, that is simply a factor you can not avoid in any inquisitorial human research. That is the reason why you hope to have a large sample so as to dilute those type of outlier responses.

I just took the survey, it would be cool to see you post your thesis here when you are done with it.
